I'm looking for a small glass breaking tool--something I can wear on me. I took a chance on one of those 'Tactical Pens' from Amazon with a glass breaker point on one end, but the dang thing is giant, and I wouldn't wear it on my outer carrier. I'm looking for something small--small like a pen. I have one of the bigger hammer-looking glass breakers in my squad, I would just like to have something on me. Any suggestions? |

If you don't want to carry something extra, a well-aimed shot from an ASP at a corner will shatter a window just about 100% of the time. Knife with glassbreaker in the handle is another good option. That's a requirement for any knife I carry. Again, go towards corners to guarantee a first-hit break. The resqme is a good tool, but practice with it to get a feel for how much force it takes to fire the spring-loaded pin. |

When I was in the FD, I carried a snap-on center punch in my pocket. It was the size of a bic pen. Not like one of those fat chunky center punches. if you saw it sticking out of my pocket you would assume it was just some kind of metal body pen. Keep it sharp and a quick push into the corner of a window makes quick work of it. P.S. Wear gloves and look away when you do it, always. More than once I had tempered glass windows explode and send pieces of glass 5' in every direction. ETA: This is what I carried for years, still sits in my tool box today |

Safety glass is pre-stressed, so it shatters (you can actually see the stress pattern in the glass with polarized glasses. It looks like a grid of dots). |
The Resqme's work great. We have them in our unit vehicles. Tested them on a junked Crown Vic, and it did all the windows on the first hit. Wear gloves and safety glasses

I had one that was a backwards spring looking tool. You put it against the window, then pulled back on the back half before letting go. Worked every time, and I got to use it often. It was the size of an ink pen so it just replaced one of them in my pocket. I can't remember the brand of the one I had, gave it to a new guy who seemed like he would use it... Those are garbage for glass with any kind of lamination or tint film. They may crack the glass but you still have to have a tool for some break and take action. They also make these things called shatterballs now. Like a little spoked steel marble. Haven’t used those yet. Link Asp has been old faithfull, and it’s also good for clearing glass from the frame. |
