I thought my Nikon 300mm AIS lens focusing tube was a little stiff, so I ordered the special grease for lubricating the helicoid. Just take it apart, lubricate, and put back together. No big deal, right? WRONG! WRONG! WRONG! This lens has two separate thread mechanisms that must be matched perfectly with each other. The first being the fociuing tube to the main body and the other being the helicoid inside the focusing tube. NEVER , NEVER, NEVER ever take a lens apart without marking the EXACT location when the threads actually separate! One of the dumbest things I've ever done. Frustration tried my patience as I work intermittently over a period of three days trying to get this lens back together correctly. Take it apart, adjust both sets of threads starting points, put it together, and still wrong . Over and over again. But I finally got it. Great lesson learned the hard way.. |

I bought my wife the 18-300 about 9 years ago. It's pretty worn and this fall started having the same issues as yourself. If you tilt it 180 you can hear something inside rattling around. Bought her a new one for Xmas but might take the old lens in for an estimate. |
