Let’s discuss Buddhism!! Buddhism is a major global religion and philosophy based on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama—known as the Buddha—who lived in India during the 5th or 6th century BCE. It focuses on personal spiritual development, the pursuit of inner peace, and ending the cycle of suffering and rebirth. Core Beliefs: Four Noble Truths: Life involves suffering, suffering is caused by craving, suffering can be stopped, and the Eightfold Path leads to the end of suffering. The Noble Eightfold Path: A guide for moral conduct, meditation, and wisdom to achieve liberation.Karma and Rebirth: Actions have consequences, and beings go through a cycle of rebirth (samsara) until they reach ultimate liberation. Nirvana: A peaceful state free from suffering, greed, hatred, and delusion. Non-Theism: Buddhism does not center on the worship of a supreme creator god. |

| For what I know of Buddhism, it's probably the only religion (using the term loosely) that I'd ever consider if I were to leave my faith. Which I don't see happening. I've seen the leader of the local Buddhist temple in my clinic a few times over the years. He and his followers generally seem at peace and are affable, pleasant people. |

To frame Buddhism and contrast it with other religions, there is this handy guide I found online. Forgive the crassness, but it is brief and actually pretty accurate. Eastern Traditions Taoism: Sh!t happens. Confucianism: Confucius say, "Sh!t happens." Buddhism: If sh!t happens, it isn't really sh!t. Zen Buddhism: What is the sound of sh!t happening? Hinduism: This sh!t has happened before. Hare Krishna: Sh!t happens, rama rama ding dong. Abrahamic Traditions Islam: If sh!t happens, it is the will of Allah. Judaism: Why does this sh!t always happen to us? Catholicism: If sh!t happens, you deserve it. Protestantism: Let sh!t happen to someone else. Calvinism: Sh!t happens because you don't work.
