First off, thank you to all that reply. I am looking for a quality 3/3a vest for work. I am switching agencies and the vest i currently use of 9 years old but comfortable. I have an ABA Extreme that was tailored to me, looking for something along those lines. The new Extreme vests by Safariland just don't look that appealing. I certainly don't want to drop that kind of cabbage w/o being able to try it on. I am currently looking at the Safelife HG2 or Hyperline vests to go in my outer carrier. Not interested in garbage like VSMN or NC Star....no fly by night crap. I do not mind spending the money for something that my life will depend on. |

I was on the Point Blank Alpha Elite for years until the Alpha Elite Black came out. I've switched to an external carrier but still get the Alpha Elite Black armor to stick in it. We've standardized on the Alpha Elite Black in IIIA. We discussed going back to II when we switched from 357SIG to 9mm, but we decided to stay with the IIIA. |

My agency switched over a couple years ago to the TYR tactical vest. (The green and tan one you see all the 3 letter fed agencies are using.) In my 27 years in LE, its probably the most well designed and comfortable vest I have ever been issued. And thats saying a lot. Over the years in various different configurations, I have worn Second Chance, Safariland, Protech, ABA, and Point blank. I have worn Kevlar, Spectra, and for a short time even had a UC vest made with ZYLON that they discovered after a couple of years was about as good as a wet newspaper... Of all the miracle fibers on the market that have come and gone, there is a reason everyone keeps coming back to kevlar. By far the TYR is the most comfortable and offers the most coverage with the exception of the Protech Cover6+ entry vest I had. The Cover6+ is a front opening design that has lots of overlap on the front, rear, shoulders and sides... but its not something you want to be out on patrol with... I have no idea of cost for what the TYR vest is running these days, but it is the best 3A vest I have ever worn. So even if its a little pricey, its worth it. |
