Its time for me to think about what wood is best for bed slats. Sure I could buy the slats but heck, I built the bed by hand. Pine, poplar, plywood, ? |

Poplar is cheaper than Pine in my AO. Sanded Plywood can be cheaper than all the above. I guess it depends on application, but sanded Ply would be the most cost effective in my AO. Now, you can find cheaper wood at yard sales, Craigs list, etc. It just takes a lot of hunting. From an application and strength perspective, it seems to me any of the above could be fine for "slats" supporting the mattrrss. |

I have 2 antique beds that were built as a matched set in the 20s. The slats are ash. I would definitely avoid ply but, I've certainly seen pine slats. They'll flex quite a bit but, short of grown adults jumping on it, shouldn't break as long as they're clear of knots. |

I can get pine from my local big box store. My local lumber yard has all kinds of wood to include poplar. Pine tends to have knots, does that matter? Poplar is generally very clear. I have never seen or ever asked for ash. |

Floating slats or fixed (is you using glue or not - glue or not matters with respect to how stuff wants to naturally 'move' around (or not want to move around depending on the material) ) ??? The finish you choose for whatever slats is important.  |
