People have the right to feel safe in their place of worship. Last night that was not the feeling at Central Synagogue of New York City. Shabbat Services at Major New York Synagogue Disrupted, Congregant and Security Assaulted Haaretz "An individual disrupted Shabbat services at Central Synagogue in Manhattan on Friday and struck a member of the congregation, according to the New York Police, who said that the attacker damaged synagogue property and spit at and headbutted a member of the security team. "Police said that no one was seriously injured and that additional NYPD resources were deployed to the synagogue. The attack comes days after a group of nearly a dozen rabbis met with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, urging him to moderate his rhetoric on Israel, which they say has contributed to rising antisemitism and anti-Jewish hate crimes in the city. Mamdani denounced the attack on X. "I can only imagine the pain and fear an attack like this, during Shabbat services, causes for the congregation and for Jewish New Yorkers across our city." Central Synagogue, a Reform Jewish congregation in Midtown Manhattan, is one of New York's most significant Jewish places of worship. The synagogue's rabbi, Angela Buchdal, one of the more prominent Jewish leaders in America, has increasingly hardened her rhetoric against Mamdani, recently imploring him 'to stop using rhetoric that demonizes Jews and the Jewish state.' Mark Treyger, head of the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York, condemned the attack, writing on X, 'Accountability matters. But enforcement alone cannot cure a climate increasingly poisoned by hatred and dehumanization. I've even done a synagogue and a mosque in the same day. My cousin said watching it on livestream was terrifying. I'm glad they had security and NYPD present so it didn't get any worse. Many of the faces are familiar because they are the same speakers and musicians week after week so this feels more personal when I see them horrified and scared in the video. |

Never ha to use it, but we were all ready if need arose. |
