I've soldered a good bit before, but figure I'd rather pay someone who knows what they are doing. Got an old Dell laptop battery I'd like rebuild with new lithium cells. |

| I'd advise against changing the chemistry. Every chemistry charges differently, and the circuits and controls for your current battery packs won't be appropriate for the new batteries. Possibly dangerously so. |

That's a hard no from me on rebuilding lithium battery packs. In most laptops these days they aren't really serviceable. They are slimmed down, custom size, smushed, and glued into whatever place the manufacturer could fit it. Also known as "spicy pillows". Just buy a replacement battery for your model and try to avoid random chinese sellers. Some laptops will also require you to do a battery condition and reset procedure which usually involves a bit of voodoo. My laptops currently all have the batteries disconnected to mitigate fire risk. |

So, yeah, they can be rebuilt. Just use the same type of cells, of course. Can look for higher capacity ones, hopefully the charging circuit is smart enough to adapt, if needed. I was tempted to do that for an old-ass laptop I have laying around. Got some used good cells from something else, never got around to doing the rebuild. I can still find cheap batteries on ebay for my 10-15 year old laptops, so I haven't bothered to rebuild those. |

My thoughts is wouldn't a used or new battery for a ten year old laptop be in the same state or worse than my current 10yo battery I am replacing? Dell has end of life'd my batteries some time ago. |

| OP, Laptop Battery Express sells new batteries for older laptops. I replaced one two years ago in a Dell E6440, for $102 delivered, and it is working just fine. |
