I've been researching subwoofers for about a month. I currently have two boomy one note wonders (budget 12" ported) in my living room. I decided on the RSL Speedwoofer 12S, but it is currently out of stock. This has given me time to reconsider. If I spend money on a new sub, I want it to be a noticeable improvement over what I currently have. While the RSL will blow away my current subs, my inner voice is telling me to go big or go home. With commercial 18" subs being way out of my price range, a DIY sub might be the answer. I can build a sealed box for a 18" Dayton Ultimax II and add a Beringer amp for about the same price as the RSL. If I buy a bigger amp than I need, I can always build a second one later if the single 18 is lacking. Anyone go this route? |

I've never built one. However, I do have a Genelec 1094A (circa 2000) that I need to sell. This thing is a beast. I have used it in very large theaters and had people's pants shaking. It's self-powered. Spent most of it's existence in my living room. Good luck, OP. Sounds like fun. |
| I wish you would have posted this a few weeks ago. I just practically gave away two Mach 5 audio UXL-18 subwoofers and a bunch of MDF and baltic birch plywood. Was going to build 2 refrigerator sized subwoofers for my home theater, but wife and kids do not like reference levels, so it would have been a waste of time and space. visit the avsforum if you want some great subwoofer ideas. |

Yeah, back in 2007 I built one. Used TC Sounds TC3000 15" sub, 2 sheets of MDF for a 3.5 or 4cu ft cab. Cant recall size now its been a while. Powered it with a Crown power amp dumping 1200 watts into it. Also had a minidsp for EQ. It was pretty awesome, but I was also a bachelor at the time. We moved 11 years ago...Still have the sub in its original shipping box, but cut down the cabinet and tossed it after we moved, and sold the minidsp and amp. One day I may do something with the sub...maybe. |
| Update- I ended up buying an RSL Speedwoofer 12S. While I like building things, I really don't like painting or finishing wood. With this going in the living room, it has to look decent. I'll have to wait till I get a house with a dedicated home theater before building a pair of monster subs. |

One day I may do something with the sub...maybe. I'm running dual 15's using a Lightning Storm motor (TC Sounds 3HP) and TC3000 top with the silver titanium cone. My Behringer Feedback Destroyer died a few months ago and I haven't connected my Dayton DSP yet. The old motors are not copper lined so the inductance is really high which causes a 15db peak at 54hz. Boomy is the best description so an EQ is a must. I have four of the 3HP Neo motors, 15" baskets, cones from Sundown and spiders from Fix My Speaker so all I need are coils and some time to build. I also have a custom 18" with a TC3000 motor from Fix My Speaker. That's a small sample of the subs I have. |
