I'm Prior Service Army, and have been out longer than it takes to get a retirement  Have a family member who went through BMT, his tech school, and is now stationed stateside. He is still waiting on his clearance... Says he is not able to do his job ( MX ) , and has no access to computers needed to do his job, or online training. I have been out for 25 years, and it was not a thing for me. Is it really that backed up? He is saying he cant even get leave due to no access? |

I remember more than one person during my time in the Air Force having to wait a little longer than average to get their clearance. One young man in particular waited nearly two years until it came back that he was ineligible for the clearance needed to remain in Security Forces. He was offered the ability to separate or retrain into supply or Force Support (clerks and jerks) He took the discharge which was the best option because he wasn’t exactly the best troop as it was. It turns out this kid joined a little late in life and was in arrears for child support and ran up all kinds of credit cards. So usually a hold up will be due to jacked up finances or it comes out little Johnny was medicated when he was a kid. Juvenile background investigations can take some time. Hopefully this kid gets his stuff together and won’t become a box kicker or dishwasher. |

Thanks for the reply, I don't " get it"... It's my kid... Nothing that I would know of to hold him up. He has no credit problems, in fact... He has more cash saved up than most. He said that they had a meeting with several of them in BMT, and then again at his Tech School. He has now been at his duty station ( Where only the best go  ) and still nothing.I would think if they are so short handed for MX type folks, they would have had that taken care of. I was a Medic, and also had one. I had it all ready to go before I graduated AIT. He still has a good attitude, but I can see where it could get a new Airman frustrated. |

Depending on what flavor of maintenance (and where his assignment is), he may need to get a TS, which takes longer than a Secret clearance. It's not unusual for one or two people out of a tech school class to take longer than others, but most new recruits get cleared eventually. His unit also may not allow new Airmen to take leave until they hit certain upgrade training benchmarks....and he may not be able to progress toward those benchmarks until he has the appropriate clearance. Wouldn't be unusual, but probably frustrating for him in the moment. It will be over quickly. Hopefully he enjoys it while it lasts, this is probably the least stressful point of his career, with the least amount of responsibility. |

Frustrating does seem to be the word of the week with him, but.. He still has a pretty good attitude over all of this. His mother and I just dropped off his vehicle, and even though it is about to be getting really cold.... At least he has options other than being stuck in the dorm He knows he has it pretty good at the moment, but he is also getting frustrated that he cant even log onto a computer to do anything, and its about to be his 1 year mark since entering BMT. He will be fine, It just seems to me that this is taking way to long, if they are so hard up for MX types. |
