Hey guys, Any recommendations on a good driver for a very low-skill casual golfer? I played my first round since 2007 yesterday, and it was pretty fun. I’m in a position now with my company that golf outings would be a good way to entertain clients. My clubs are pretty dated, which in itself isn’t a big deal. I have Bertha cavity-back irons from 2000 or so, and don’t see any reason to change those. My driver on the other hand could use an upgrade. It’s a mcgregor from the mid-late 90’s, and is roughly 1/2 size of a current modern driver. I hit some other people’s drivers during the round, and seemed to have better results with them. Probably a fair amount of chance involved there though, as my swing is not consistent enough to really evaluate based on a few shots. All that said, any recommendations on what to look for in a new one? There seems to be no end to the used, like new drivers for sale within 20 miles of me on FB marketplace, so I’ll likely look to pick something up that way. I don’t expect to get too crazy with this, I just want something that is a little easier to hit, and is more presentable than what I currently have. In other words, if I take people to a golf course I don’t want my janky-ass driver to be the topic of conversation. Any tips appreciated! |

| I'll tell you what I did when I played golf (poorly). I took my driver out of my bag and left it at home. generally teed off with my 3-wood. I gave up a bit of distance, but I tended to stay in the fairway more. I found I could make up the lost distance on my second shot. |

Titleist TSR2 is forgiving, looks great, and can be had for a decent price with the new GT series being out for a while. The older TSi series is also good and even cheaper. Other options I’d look out for are Ping G430 Max, Callaway Paradym, Taylormade Qi10 or Stealth. If you really don’t want to spend much, find a Taylormade Sim2. Your age and how far you carry a well-struck drive will help with shaft selection. |

I am a terrible golfer. And I have no desire to become a good golfer. One of my problems was that I was really bad off the tee. My friend had a one iron, which is supposedly the most difficult club to hit. I used that freaking club for everything. I drove the ball pretty darn far with it. Yeah, I guess that's not very helpful but that's my story and I'm sticking to it |

I agree with others.... Find a driver with a higher loft (12°) so it's almost like -in the old days- an old persimmon 2 Wood. Hit it dead straight. Hit it dead straight again. Doesn't matter if you're only about 125-150 yards with it. Practice and practice. Work on tempo and a little more swing speed, while concentrating on hitting it straight. A word of caution: *NEVER* play "bash the ball" like I did way back in the day. Swing so hard, you almost spin out of your shoes. Driver, driver, driver, driver.... Sure you'll hit it 150 yards, but you'll also slice the "F" out of it, so it'll go another 150 yards off into the trees. Longest drive -ever- in my life was 284 yards, slight fade, almost in the right side rough on a par 5. But it took me YEARS to learn how to do that, but at the expense of my "short game". Put me 15-20 yards to the green, with a gentle little pitch shot with a wedge, and I'll sail the m.... f.... up over the green, down the backside and into a bunker. |

I realize that a lot of you guys don’t play very often and aren’t very good, but there is direct correlation between distance off the tee and scoring potential. As long as you keep the ball in bounds and out of hazards, 250 yard drive in the rough beats 200 in the middle of the fairway every time. Stat systems like Decade have proven it across all handicaps. The other thing is people of all skill levels still miss the fairway with fairway woods and long irons far more often than they think. Hit the ball as far as you can without unnecessary risk for penalty strokes. |

The Ping G series of drivers are about as forgiving as it gets. Even the old OG G holds its own for distance and forgiveness. |

the second swing golf suggestion is what i would do if i were you. even if getting used having someone get the right loft and shaft will help you a ton. i had a stock ping g430 max that i bought off the shelf. went to a driver fitting and the guy put me in a totally different shaft and adjusted the loft and it made a big difference in distance. IMO drivers these days are way more forgiving than fairways off the tee. |
