Currently have my second Shiba (Ronin). He's 14.5 years old and not picky about eating. Previous Shiba (Shogun) was the same and lived to 13 years old.

Family had one about 10 years ago. He wasn't picky at all and was often spoiled with table scraps.

They can be drama queens though.

Thank you both for the comments and thoughts.

ETA good Lord ours is picky - the most picky I've ever encountered. And yes, I know she's playing us, but when she won't eat for so long, we give in. We had the misfortune

of meeting someone out and about that had one, and when we asked what theirs ate, they didn't hesitate for a second stating "what we eat".

So on the one hand we're a little less concerned about her being totally crazy, but it's still the most PITA circus for feeding a dog I've ever encountered in all my years on this earth.

IMHO this about sums up living with a Shiba (or maybe better stated, having a Shiba allow you to care for it

). It's the only dog we've ever purchased - all the others have been rescues. As a "seasoned" dog owner couple, I confirm they can be work to keep happy and healthy. Ours is more cat-like than some of our cats. A bit aloof, climbs high on furniture, cleans itself, and has little desire to please others.

But we love her so much, and she's kinda become Daddy's girl.

I don't have a Shiba, but the following should apply to anyone with a pet that is 'picky'...

...Have you checked for food allergies or food related health issues? The dogs going to avoid eating it if it makes them feel sick.

Assuming health issues are ruled out and you are using a quality food option, then the dog can eat what is given to it or it can go hungry until it's hungry enough to eat what is given to it. "Hunger is the best seasoning" works well for both people and pets.

Thank you. IMHO these particular critters are very unique in their extreme stubbornness, and we tried that many times, only to ultimately have her suffer cycles of unhealthy swings in overall health and wellbeing. I've had dogs since I first came into the world, and we've never, ever had one even remotely close to her in stubbornness. She has been checked by the vet many times too, and our vet, which is awesome, pretty much concluded each time "you shoulda researched this - typical Shiba weirdness" LOL. The biggest difference, and the catalyst for her finally turning around, IMO, was first simply getting her fixed. Wife and I were in strong disagreement on that. I resisted that for a good while, for fear of her passing while under (we've had one dog and two cats experience catastrophic reactions to anesthesia), and because I selfishly thought we might want to her to have pups. My wife was convinced that fixing her first would get us on the right path, and she was totally correct. I just thank God that we got her right now, and she's eating the same food the others eat, albeit with a fair amount of freeze dried raw topper mixed in with each feeding.

All is well now, thank God.

She's a high maintenance job and a half, and I'm thankful for the task.
