I'm interested in making a violin. Does anyone know of workshops within a few hours of Springfield, IL that teach instruments? I looked at Woodcraft classes in St Louis, and asked a luthier in that area. Woodcraft classes are mostly turning classes or cutting boards. The luthier does not provide training. The Chicago School of Violin Making is a full on 3 year school. I'm looking for classes teaching violin family building and repair, guitar building/repair, or things similar. |

I'm looking for classes teaching violin family building and repair, guitar building/repair, or things similar. 3 years to learn the basics and then a good many years to actually get 'proficient' at any of it and that would only be 'if' a guy actually did the stuff every single day and put in the effort to master it...  Not to mention the 'specialty' tools you would likely need to have...  Even if you had a more or less fully equipped woodworking shop with most of the basic tools on hand I can understand 'needing' to toss another large pile of money at it to get geared up for something specialized like violins.  |
