I don't believe most conspiracies but the whole world deciding nobody owns Antarctica and restricting world access to it is pretty fucking suspicious. I tend to think they are hiding something serious there. |

I used to work there. Well, on the research ships. Everything I saw was mundane. It's a remote place at the end of a long logistics chain. The treaty was put in place with the appearance of good intentions. But every country has their eye on the place for its resources. I believe once as resources grow scarce here in the world, we will start mining and drilling the place and that's when open conflict will occur. Given how expensive it is doing business there, I doubt we'll start exploiting it for minerals in my lifetime. One of the cool mysteries is Lake Vostok. A liquid water lake under thousands of meters of ice. The Russians spent extraordinary amounts to drill into it but stopped short. I'm told the science community expressed concerns about contaminating a body of water that has been buried for thousands of years. There is a possibility that life exists there, fed by geothermal hot springs similar to deep sea vents but completely isolated from the surface. IMO this is probably as close to alien life as any of us will ever see. Have a look at the treaty map.  We have the South Pole station. I believe that's for two reasons: 1. Pole is very expensive to maintain, and the US is one of the few countries that can do it. I doubt the value it produces in terms of science really justifies its expense. 2. It gives us a footprint in every other claim USAP took both the research ships, the Nathaniel B Palmer and the Laurence M Gould, off charter recently. That was a huge decision. The Gould supported Palmer Station logistically and I don't know how they plan to replace that capability. |

There are lots of rules. Enforcement might prove difficult. There is a Navy facility at McMurdo which is the subject of mystery to the science community If you want to get a real flavor of life on the ice read a book called "Big Dead Place" |

It's pretty bad when something interesting is found on Google Earth and as soon as it's public and spreads, it's blurred out like NASA images automation. I think they use the sharing of a tacked location traffic as a flag to blur it out before people see more than they're supposed to. Who decides who gets to see what? Most all of Antarctica is essentially classified. Really makes me think that Byrd was more accurate than people would (or Even refuse to) believe. The newspaper article/interview with Byrd after mission wiped in South America was the old timey way of blurring out features on Google Earth/Microsoft Globe and all the other geospatial data companies. There is one that you can pay a few thousand to for 2m resolution 10 km square of a spot on Earth, for people with big farms/ranches to print for their wall and stuff. Look here for a quote Super Mind Twist explaining that Antarctica can't be imaged because of satellite orbits not being polar (the custom imagery satellites and some starlink do), that's a really long gaslighting article that's sad to read. It totally omits that the imagery was there. Wikipedia just admits it which really goes over the line in the opposite of normal.
