I’ve sort of been thinking about the morality of representative democracy lately. I think of living under the rule of a monarch. His actions are his and he alone is likely to be judged by God for them. The people living under his rule are likely insulated from any eternal judgement resulting from the actions of the monarch since the people have no say in what that monarch chooses to do. Now compare that to living in a “representative democracy” like ours. We claim this government “of, by, and for the people”. Furthermore it is claimed that the government derives power “by the consent of the governed.” As a consequence of this, I would not be at all surprised whether we citizens will be judged by God for the actions of our government. I find this to be disconcerting. I do not know what the official Catholic ruling on this is (whether or not we will be judged for the action of the State). |
