| What a horrible thing. I wish his family well. I would guess that one of the obvious reasons for including something like that in the obituary is to help ward off the million questions that are sure to come when someone that young dies. Explaining a normal death over and over is brutal enough explaining something so dark is almost unimaginable. |

He wanted to quit and we did everything possible to help him, but it wasn't enough. |

On the other hand, when you’re able to say “…after a long battle with alcohol addiction” and have it as blameless as “…after a long battle with cancer”, then the stigma is lifted. |

Because it helps remind others struggling with addiction (especially those in recovery) that if you stop giving a shit about your sobriety, it will kill you. Reading those details of his death actually helped me personally - I'm 36 (just two years younger than he was) and have been sober for 14 months after a fairly long battle with alcohol addiction. Reading his obituary just now (right after putting my two girls to bed) reminds me that I can never get lazy about my recovery or that I can ever think it's OK to "just have one." It will rob me of everything I love. It could kill me at 38 just like Matt. Good on his family for putting those details in there. It's already helping others. May he rest in peace and his family find comfort. |
