27 feet. Robotics class involvement. You dont by chance have a 28 foot swimming pool for sea trials before display? I bet you could get a volunteer off the swim team to test pilot it.
What happens to these awesome projects when you run out of display space? Do they get saved our have to go in the trash? |

I think Iv'e got enough room left for displays for the years I have left.....I hope. One project that we didn't really have a place for, was a decorated fish sculpture. It was a contest. We only got 3rd.  , but still got $2500 in winnings. That sculpture was on display in Jackson for a year, then when it was time to come home, I sold it for another $1000. It had too many sharp edges to be openly displayed.....or at least that's what I told myself. Luckily, I know the owner, and still get to go see it.

May I make a suggestion? You're going to have enough trouble building that thing in that size and have it structurally sound. The details will be a big pain in the ass and you'll likely have to skimp to get it done. Here is a historically significant vessel that has easier lines. 
The U.S.S. George Washington has several advantages. It's draped in American flags. It is a hugely significant element of U.S. cold war history. It's powered by a nuclear reactor. It's armed with nuclear missiles. Your robotics guys can animate the bow wave and wake with pillow stuffing and some simple motors. If they get ambitious, they can make a silo open so the nifty looking Polaris missile can stick out for inspection. Think about the happy faces on the children when they see that they made the model submarine launch a nuke.
You can probably get detailed information on her layout from the Navy. It will initiate a discussion of what the cold war was really like and what the Soviet Union was really like. A lot of the last two generations seem to believe that Russia was the land of unicorns and song. You could even have the kiddies knock up a small electric chair to depict Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. |

I think I've got the structural integrity covered. We will see.
As for the details, that is what makes something like this fun. Too few details just ends up being boring. The overall shape will be the real bitch, but if we can get some good cross-section pictures, I think we can do this justice. It will not be perfect, but it should look pretty cool. I'm not sure I can find a PG version of Das Boot, but I'd love to have the students watch it at the end. |

With the STEM push, I think it's odd that the math dept doesn't want to assist, but that's basic math. Having them calculate torque vectors for optimal structural member size might be a bit above the students heads.
