So my camera is getting pretty old. It's an 80D and I think it's probably 10 years old or more at this point. Anyhow there was a rare lightning storm last night and I wanted to get some pics. It's been 2 or 3 years since the last time there was a good enough light show to bother with it. In that time, I totally forget how to operate the more obscure features of the camera. The last few storms, I had to download the user manual and probably spent a half hour or more re-familiarizing myself with the settings. This time, I just typed 80D intervalometer into the address bar and the exact instructions I needed popped up. Neat! Now I just need to actually go somewhere with a cool foreground next time there's a storm.

"AI" is actually LLM, think predictive text on steroids. It's absolutely fantastic at parsing large amounts of data for a human to review, what it's not good at is being "AI". |

Yeah I guess it may not be "intelligent" in the traditional sense. But it does do a lot of things that took humans a lot longer to do. I definitely liked having the ability to find obscure camera features without scrolling through pages of the manual. I guess 30 years ago you'd just have a paper manual with tabs on pages you needed to reference quickly. Or just make copies of those pages and bring them along. Now the whole manual is on your phone, but flipping to the relevant pages isn't as simple. That said, there is a lot of stuff it can do now like read cursive and convert written property descriptions into maps that used to require a human. In 5 years it will wipe out entire industries, and there won't be new ones to replace them. At least not fast enough to prevent the upheaval. |
