Saturday we picked up our new rescue from the local Humane Society, good people, NOT affiliated with the anti-hunting national outfit. Meet Sammi. 
She's a Basset Hound that was used as a puppy factory in Utah, rescued and brought down to Casa Grande. When my wife saw her in the shelter, it was love at first sight - only things missing was the slow motion camera and dramatic music. The pic was right after we got her home, still a little lethargic but resting on her new orthopedic mattress, probably the most comfortable place she's had to sleep in her 2.5 years. She acts like a puppy again, very happy very loving...but... She hasn't pooped in 3 days. I was told by the shelter worker that the surgery was quite involved due to her uterus practically falling out due to being overbred, and something about intestines being moved around. No, she doesn't have a cone on, because she can't reach the incision, and has shown no signs of trying. We were both surprised about no cone when we picked her up, but that's what they told us and what looks like what is going on. But...no pooping. She has peed, so something is getting through, but my worry is something got twisted inside when they put her back together. She is NOT showing any signs of distress, has been outside to potty many, many times and hasn't tried to poop yet that I have seen. She didn't want to eat any dry kibble or anything for a day when she came home, just a piece of cheese to take her pills, which we really haven't had to fight about. She started eating wet food only yesterday, and has eaten at least twice that I know of, no issues. If she hasn't pooped by the time I get home, (work Graveyard), I will probably have to take her to the vet. Only plus is the guy who did the surgery works at the animal hospital we use, which is less than 2 miles away. So, am I overreacting, would this be normal for a dog that had invasive surgery, and had a complete change in environment? Edit to add, I was told she was a pure bred, (I don't know enough to be sure), but I think why they used her as a puppy mill is her right front paw is twisted out to the side, don't know if it's an old injury or a birth defect, not that it bothers her in the slightest, or me/wife/son. We just think she is a really neat loving dog, and I don't care if she's pure bred or not - I have had MANY mutts over the years that were wonderful dogs. |
| The opiates from surgery can bind her up, just like a human. She's eating which is good. If still doesn't poop and starts puking up the food, that's a sign of a potential blockage and a reason to go back to the vet. Just keep a close eye on her for a couple days. More than 2 more days, and I'd at least call the vet and ask. |

awwww  I don't think you are over-reacting. I would certainly follow up with the vet that did the surgery. Not pooing can be a sign of something seriously wrong in some cases. Hopefully, not in your case, but better safe than sorry. |

Finally got X rays done, everything inside id in great shape, and full, ready to poop, so the vet says 12-48 hours she should power dump. But she is fine internally. What was a surprise ti find BB under the skin over her left rear hip, where she was shot quite some time ago. Attached File But she is very active and happy! So, we wait. |

And SUCCESS!!! Not one, not two, but four huge dumps - never been happier to see dog turds. Sammi looks like she feels much relieved, as well. Thank you all for the positive comments. Now to keep this little girl happy and healthy and once those staples come out, and she's fully healed, she's getting a BATH.

Thank you - she is fully healed and had her first grooming appointment yesterday, and got her first chew toy, as she is a wee bit destructive. Apparently, she never had her very own toy before, but she knows now it's hers and nobody is going to take it away. And she smells better. She loves her human momma, too.
