This was posted on the Fayetteville Reddit board. I never knew that Fort Bragg housed prisoners of war. The story is that this prisoner was a general worker around this area and this is a pic of a letter and postcard he sent back to Germany. Attached File |

Originally Posted By 45B10: FT Leonard Wood had POW's during WW2 as well. IIRC the post laundry was built by German pows.. All of the rock work across from the hospital was done by the POW's and is on the register of historic places. The camp was in the field across the road from the airfield. |

I think it cost more than it brought into the town, even though everyone in uniform was a volunteer. Basically the town is just dead otherwise. It doesn’t help that it’s in the middle of nowhere. There was only one policeman on duty last year, so the fake MPs had to perform actual traffic control lol. They still have an old brick movie theater, so they played a 40s film, and also hosted a “USO ball” so it was a really nice event. Glad I got to participate once before they shut it down. |

From the postmarks, looks like US mail to New York, then into the Army Post Office System. I would guess then handed over to the Red Cross, to exchange for mail from US PWs to come back the same way in reverse. |
