7.5 FK and the FK Brno PSD (Page 1 of 3)

[Last Edit: 74novaman][Edited]
I'll be completely honest to start the thread: My goal here is to get enough people hyped and interested in both this cartridge and the FK Brno pistols that they continue to sell well enough in the US that I have continue to have access to parts/ammo/support, because I am really loving both the PSD pistol and the 7.5 FK round. I will try to continue to update this thread as I do more shooting with the gun. I'll start with some chrono numbers. 9mm 124gr Federal HST from a 4.5" Glock= 1200 fps, 397 ft.lbf 5.7 40gr Hornady Vmax from a 10.4" PS90= 2150 fps, 411 ft.lbf 7.5 FK 101gr F9 Flatnose from a 5.3" PSD= 1838fps, 758 ft.lbf Left to right: 5.7x28mm, 9mm, 7.5 FK ![]() 7.5 FK 95gr F5 Hollowpoint from a 5.3" PSD= 1879fps, 745 ft.lbf 10mm 175gr Hornady CD Flexlock from a 5.3" PSD= 1129fps, 495 ft.lbf So a 10mm load gives you about ~100 ft.lbf more energy than a really solid, well regarded 9mm defensive load, and the 7.5 FK hollowpoint gives you another ~250 ft.lbf of energy over the 10mm. Energy isn't the end all/be all, but throwing 101gr solid copper round at 1800 fps certainly has potential. So the round is neat, but what about the gun? Yall might remember the FK Brno Field Pistol that got hyped a few years ago and was a $10,000 pistol. Ouch. Thankfully, they decided to make a gun that might actually sell, and built a polymer framed version called the PSD that comes optics ready. It retails at Italian Firearms Group for around $1,500. It's not a lightweight pistol, and mine is 2 lbs, 15 oz with a light and red dot empty. For reference, my CZ Shadow 2 without a light or dot weighs 2 lbs, 13 oz empty. So its heavy for a polymer gun, but its not a complete boat anchor either. ![]() The weirdly thicc (two cs) front end houses a unique recoil system developed for the 7.5 FK that uses a tungsten weight in addition to the recoil spring. The 10mm barrel also uses the same recoil spring and weight and makes 10mm pretty pleasant to shoot and 40 s&w feel like 9mm. ![]() ![]() They also make a 9mm conversion for it, but it requires a different recoil spring and I have a ton of good 9mms already. I was only interested in shooting 7.5 FK, 10mm and 40 s&w from this gun. The swap from 7.5 FK to 10mm takes 20 seconds to swap barrels. Everything else stays the same, including magazines. The magazines hold 16 rounds of 7.5 FK, but only 10 rounds of 10mm. Time for my first negative comment about the gun: 40 s&w fits in the magazine...sort of. I could only load between 8-10 rounds per mag in the 4 magazines I tried. I assume because of how short the round is, they can get stacked up weird in the magazine. Despite my issues loading them, it fed and ejected 40 s&w with zero issues. Will report back if that changes. They also make a stock for the gun, and the round is expressly designed to be effective at distances beyond a normal pistol shot if a pistol/pdw is your kind of thing. I already SBRd mine and will report back with how it is to shoot with the stock after the stamp clears. ![]() The early guns had some issues with light primer strikes, but the newer ones apparently have slightly longer firing pins, and I've shot a little over 150 rounds through the gun, 1/3 of that 7.5 FK, 1/3 10mm and 1/3 40 s&w. I have had zero failures so far (I fully acknowledge how pathetically low that round count is to call it reliable or not, but I've only had the gun for a couple weeks so I'm working on it). 7.5 FK will thump you pretty good, 10mm recoil isn't bad at all, and recoil shooting 40 s&w feels like shooting a 9mm, its very light. https://italianfirearmsgroup.com/fk-brno/ is the importer, and if you are interested in high power handgun stuff or just want a unique 10mm handgun, I really think the PSD is worth a look. There's even a company making ammo stateside now: https://tascosamachine.com/ Please help me keep them in business and importing 7.5 FK ammo. Thank you. ![]() |

| These guns are very interesting to me. Ammo cost is a big hurdle. I picked up a 22TCM to mess with because am was 40¢ a round for a while and would drop down lower on sale. |

The fact that you can shoot a round that still penetrates lvl3 soft armor at 100 yards from a pistol is part of the whole reason it exists. But I agree a PDW would be great. Stribog already makes a 10mm roller delayed PCC, it would be amazing if they could spin up a 7.5 barrel/mags for it. |

I love the cartridge idea and am glad to see they pulled their heads out of their asses long enough to make an affordable pistol for it. (This is the first I heard of the plastic frame version) I couldn't figure out what they were thinking when their product was just the $10k pistol and its special ammo. |

I had the absolute pleasure of zeroing two of these in for a good friend year before last. It’s a really cool gun that I would *love* to have someday. Very misunderstood and underrated in build quality and performance. For those that don’t know, these match slug weight and velocity of a short barreled AK in a large format handgun footprint. The beautifully machined stock sucks to use though, no matter how much I wish it didn’t. |

I had a PSD that would only function with its 10mm barrel installed. With the 7.5FK barrel it was a jammomatic piece of shit. And IFG never responded to my requests for assistance. ETA it’s a known issue with the PSDs and I don’t think there’s a fix. Something about the breech face being mis-machined. |

I remember when the Brno pistol came out and thought it was a cool idea, but it was cost prohibitive for me. Neat round though. |

Or you could use a short barrel AK / .300blk AR to get the same ballistics at a fraction of the cost. |

But then you are concealing an AK, dealing with AK recoil, AK muzzle blast, and a lot more weight. You can holster one of these… it’s the same with a USW-A1, it’s a carbine in your hip that bridges CQB out to 120-150 yards on human targets … you can face shoot someone that needs it by just putting the dot in the top of their head. Not many personal defense shots are farther than that, it wouldn’t be worth it to carry a Krinkov or 10” supersonic .300blk. |

The smallest, most modern 300 BLK PDW (Rattler) is close, but not quite, to peak 1970s pistol caliber PDW (MP5K) in terms of size. I think this 7.5 could help be the bridge. |

I was picturing an MP5 type gun, not one of those little PDW type things. |

That's fair, but the point is why would MSRP be 7X higher for steel vs plastic? or even 5X higher? (assuming the plastic one sells at MSRP and the steel one is discounted as you note) Steel at double plastic - maybe. Steel at 5-7X plastic seems ridiculous! |

I have a 7” 7.62x39 AR upper and here’s what I’ve gotten with run of the mill steel cased 124gr FMJ, which is 23gr heavier than the 101gr solid copper offering in 7.5 Wolf Military Classic 124gr FMJ 28rd group Lo: 1889 Hi: 1975 Avg: 1934 ES: 86 SD: 23.7 I have 5.45 Krinks, but no Draco or other 10ish inch barreled 7.62x39 AK. I presume they’d pick up a little more velocity compared to my 7” upper. I think 7.5 and this pistol are cool, as is 22 TCM and light/fast 9mm, but I don’t think the statement that the 7.5 is matching slug weight and velocity of a short barreled AK is accurate. |
I will try to continue to update this thread as I do more shooting with the gun.
