So Because of the gasket, I'd expect to use nothing, and put it right on the nipples (he he). However I've seen a few youtube vids where they both dope and tape it. Is this just being paranoid? What do you do?  |

The picture you gave doesn't look like an NPT fitting/thread profile. That looks like a compression fitting replacement, which is UNS threading, aka standard parallel threads. Regardless, if it has a rubber gasket, that's the seal, not the threads. So no need. |

Teflon is just meant to reduce friction to allow standard tapered threads to get tight enough to seal. Parallel threads do not seal via threads so it's not doing anything at all. If it interferes with the gasket then yeah it can cause issues, otherwise it's not going to do any bad, but it's literally doing no good either. Also, careful as it's that much easier to over torque the gasket which people do frequently enough as it is. |

Unions [pipe] were always easy to tell that some hack was doing the fitting because they'd use teflon tape and cause the sealing surface to fail to mate properly. |
