I just found out about this tragic news yesterday and it is with tears in my eyes that I write this. I am heartbroken to hear this. The world has lost a great man. Our flag is set to half mast in honor of Ed's life. I was privileged to spend a week with the Avila's working for them at Shot 2011 in Vegas. I spent the first night (maybe 2, it's been a while) bunking with Ed. I was so nervous to meet him and the family but they embraced me. I'll never forget him busting out his UV light as soon as we got into our room at the Wynn. He scanned out the beds and floor and said with his trademark grin "Wow, this is the cleanest hotel room I've ever seen!". Laughter ensued. He taught me so much during my time with him. We talked about everything. From family to time in the service to hobbies outside of shooting. He was a remarkable guy. He was a pretty serious body builder at one time in his life and also shot competitive pistol events. (IPSC or IDPA my memory is a little spotty) I learned more about the AR-15 platform in that week with the Avila's (and Joe D.) than I had known my whole life prior. "That's a handguard bud, not a barrel shroud" He once corrected me filming one of the youtube pieces. I messed up and called it a barrel shroud again and caught myself half way through the phrase, then sheepishly glanced over at Ed. There was that trademark grin again. I am 1 year older than Ed but always felt like a little kid around him. He had an air of confidence that was contagious. I was a pretty heavy drinker at the time and I remember Ed talking with me about it. Not in a condescending tone or looking at me with disdain, but with true sincerity and an open heart. I knew that he actually cared about my well being. He was so patient with me. I remember his frustration with me trying to learn HTML code to do the newsletter so I could take that off his plate and he could focus on bigger things with the business and the gun community at large. But he was always cheerful and encouraging. He was such a positive person. He didn't have negativity in his DNA at all. I know anyone that has had the opportunity to meet him will attest the same. To Jorge and Juan @GoatBoy @JLA. My heart goes out to you. I know how close you all are as brothers. I lost my older brother several years ago and I can empathize with the pain you are going through. Keep your memories of him always fresh in your minds. Make sure your children know how awesome their uncle was. To Ed.Sr @EdAvilaSr. I can't imagine the pain you are experiencing right now and will hold forever until you are reunited with Ed. Know that you raised a great man (three of them actually). A man that had a massive positive impact on the world. My prayers go out to you and your whole family. May God bless you. To the whole Arfcom family. We lost our leader and he truly was one of the greats. The world is better place from being blessed by his presence and his impact will live on for an immeasurable amount of time. The legacy he built here at ar15.com can never be understated. This place has brought more positivity to the world than can be weighed. It is a gathering of like minded souls who would give you the shirt off their back. Ed led by example and his kindness is mirrored in the member of ar15.com. I have seen and experienced first hand the generosity and true Christlike spirit of so many of this sites members and sponsors. And this is one of the legacies that Ed left. Truly one to be proud of. Ed Avila Jr. Loving father, brother and son. True patriot, 2nd amendment stalwart and one of the best guys a man could ever meet. Godspeed Edward. Into his loving arms. I will never forget you.  |

I just found out about this. I never had the pleasure of meeting him. That's my great loss. Prayers out to his family and friends. He will be missed. |

I haven't been on the sight much over the past week. My father passed away on April 9. Like Ed, he had stage 4 cancer. Like Ed, he was a fighter. Like Ed, he enjoyed shooting and talking guns. Like Ed, he was a vet. Unlike Ed, my father lived to 82 years old and was able to see his children grow up and get to know his grandchildren. I'd like to think they met where we all go, and are sitting together talking guns at the celestial range. Beyond pain, beyond discomfort, surrounded by those they loved who went before. |

I have been riding this Yamaha TTR 230 dirt bike which I just bought from Ed two months ago, right before he left Texas for Arizona again... I have fond memories of my last visits and chats with Ed and lovingly remember him every time I ride now... Attached File |

RIP Ed. Prayers for your family & friends. The brief time I talked to Ed, he was informing me I had won an AK-47 in the rifle raffle. But he didn't have it as he had not received it yet. I'll never forget what he said next: "Would you like a M-92 Krink instead, I have an extra one of those?" What a guy, some folks are all CLASS. |
