I'm with you 100%. Was thinking about this in the shower this morning. I need to stop but keep making excuses and make artificial deadlines. I keep saying to myself..."after I close XYZ deal I'll stop drinking...as soon as I get done with ABC project I'll stop drinking...after I file all these tax returns I'll stop..." I keep setting these milestones but the create new ones. I've got a problem and this is the first time ever I've put it in writing..I don't know what's more pathetic, coming out in GD or just me.... |

Absolutionist? Is that even a word? I have a tendency towards compulsion. All or nothing. I wish I could change that, but I can't. All I can do is recognize it and adapt. I quit drinking and funneled my compulsion into shooting, boxing, MMA, and lifting heavy. I'm pretty fucking happy with the results. Maybe some day I'll learn a way to overcome that compulsion. In the meantime, I'll just keep channeling it into positive things and away from negative things. but come on, there had to be a reason, spill it |

alcoholism is the only condition that is 100% self diagnosed. No one can tell you if you're an alcoholic - you wouldn't listen anyway. There's no EZ-Drunk home test kit available at CVS. But from experience, when you start justifying actions by saying you aren't drinking in the morning, etc. you already have a nagging suspicion that it might be a problem.
As an alcoholic, quitting was damn hard. And life doesn't stop coming at you because you're sober. You just learn new skills to deal with life on life's terms. BBQs still happen. Backyard fires still happen. I just remember them the next day now. |

You should double your intake to "show them" It's more of opening communication with like minded friends to see if I am ready to take a stance on what may or may not be an issue in my personal life. |

It’s tough and can make you miserable. You may or may not have withdrawals, depends on the. I used to drink daily, fairly heavy too... I fall of the wagon for a few days now, I have fairly nasty withdrawals for a couple of days. No fun.
Not a lot to do in my town that doesn’t involve drinking, gets kid of lonely when I stop. |

I grew up competing in karate and judo, so by the time I was drinking I knew not to get in fights once I'd lost my balance, coordination, timing, and reactions. The few times I fought drunk, I won, but only because I fought guys who had no business fighting. I quit because I was waking up too hung over to do the things I wanted to do with my life. It was sapping my motivation. You only get a few years to make your mark on this planet, and then your time is past. | Is one drink a day really that big of a deal? I don't drink at all, so I'm seriously asking. I know LOTS of people who drink once a day, a lot of the executives at work had a glass of hard stuff at the end of every meeting, and if they were alcoholics they hid it damn well and several retired in old age with nary a scandal. |

I was inclined to say you don't have a problem yet if it's not affecting your personal life at all.... but are you saying that you are unable to take a single night get off? You sound like you have a problem, OP. Your liver can't be conditioned to take the abuse you're putting it through. I had a former co-worker who was very smart and good at his job. He'd knock out a 12-pack of beer EVERY night. His wife left him after she found him passed out on the kitchen floor. He wouldn't wake up when she kicked him. She thought he was dead. He kept his job because he was buddies with HR and was very talented. Anyone else would have been fired for being asleep/passed out at their desk in the AM after drinking/working all night in his cube. Is being drunk every night the example you want to set for your kids, OP? |

Here I am, after midnight, 15+ beers into the day, just like yesterday and the day before, and the day before, and etc for the past 10+ years. I;m over it. I have a problem and need help. Want help. Just don't know who/where to get it from.
EDIT - Waiting for the "you're doing it wrong" or " you're a pussy" replies. I'm at my weakest moment right now and laying all out here on GD against all common sense, so fuck off/ |
| You can also develop alcohol induced psychosis and alcohol induced diabetes along with other severe health issues. Seen if first hand with my dad. He was a high functioning alcoholic, never got into trouble, never was angry or abusive, held a 6 figure job, had tons of friends, but after 40+ years of drinking it took its toll and my parents marriage fell apart and he became a totally different person. He was eventually throwing up blood and he went out and got 7 DUIs in the course of 2 years and went to prison for 5 years for causing an accident that critically injured someone. He is on insulin because of diabetes, even tho he's been sober for several years now he has psychotic episodes still. You may not think you have a problem now, but it will catch up to you eventually, and if you are asking if you have a problem then you most likely do, as someone stated previously. |

Well good nite brothers, I shall continue this tomorrow but without having a drink You may or may not have seen my bacon/ weightloss thread, but just having that in a fairly public space was a huge help for me to keep going. It was almost 7 months ago I got sick of being fat, tired, and drunk all the time. I was drinking 2 or more bottles of wine a night with beer and vodka mixed in. The go to drink was half vodka, half red wine. If I was drinking beer, it was a 6er of whatever high test IPA I brought home from the store. I drank just about every day since sometime in college. I'm 35 this month, so thats about 15 years. I had been thinking every morning, just like you "I've got to quit drinking". I didn't think I could (really I didn't think I needed to. it wasn't a big deal). I didn't realize how big of a deal it was till I quit. It was the 14th of March when I decided to quit. (and eat nothing but bacon for the next 30 days) I didn't touch alcohol for over three months. Aside from losing 75lb's, It was that best thing I've ever done. I drink now and again now. I've had a handful of beers, but mainly a couple glasses of wine on the weekends. Seems fine for now. I've changed my habits and it's not the issue it was before, but I'm acutely aware that it could be, and I have to be careful. |

Are you having just one drink or just opening the door to getting drunk every night? Depending on your answer, you might have a problem. OP - if you have to ask, you got a problem, and you damn well know it. You've got outpatient treatment options, personal/individual counseling, AA, quit cold turkey and go about it on your own, or you can speak with your doc about a script for some Antabuse. Either way, you should quit drinking. Give yourself 6 months without it and see how you feel. Best of luck to you man. |

You probably don’t realize what it is doing to you because the changes were slow and gradual over time but that much alcohol will fuck you up in a bad way. I like to have a drink or two in the evenings but a fifth will last me two weeks. I have an employee who is an alcoholic. He never drinks in the mornings, on the job or during the day but every night he drinks around 15 beers. I can see the changes in him over time and he looks way older than he is and his mind is not what it once was. He has never missed a day of work so he is functioning but he is a shell of what he once was.
I like drinking and every once in a while I drink a lot but doing it everyday is going to kill you. |

its all dependent, So far tonight i have had 2-10oz drinks of vodka over ice and 5 strong bourbons and cokes from a 20oz tumbler. Umm, if that is normal for you on a Wednesday night, and other nights is close to that amount, give or take a 2 oz. shot, I would say you have a drinking problem. Not saying all 12-step recovery groups are for you, but its worth checking out. Yeah, just is case you're in the phase where you are trying to convince yourself that it's normal....its not. That's a once or twice a month amount of booze. Not a Wednesday. If that's a normal day...you definitely have an issue. I agree with people that say you won't change until you decide to change. But let's just say you've had 40oz of 80 proof liquor in one sitting....without being preachy or high on my horse at all...that amount of sauce every day isn't just higher than average, it will kill you. You are talking about it, you're obviously concerned. |

I've had four beers since I got home an hour and a half ago and I can just kind of feel it. I drink too much on weeknights and way too much on the weekend - I think I had about 18 or so beers last weekend, and it wasn't because I thought it would be fun. I exercise a lot and stay hydrated and well-fed despite all the booze but it's still entirely unhealthy. I should cut back severely or just stop but I'm not sure I'd succeed over time; I do stop for periods of time just for my own well being but I can't seem to abandon it forever.
OP, sounds like you drink quite a bit more (by volume of alcohol) than I do. If you regularly drink more than I do it is not a good thing. You should probably cut back or consider stopping, or you could die. You're about at the level my ex consumes and she is a 24/7 crazy belligerent drunk. I'm sure you probably hold your liquor better than her, but the health effects are still equally as bad over time... Eta: Drinking 30 or 40 ounces of liquor in one sitting could put most people in the hospital, or at the very least, leaning miserably over the toilet. If that's a normal evening then it's way beyond what a person can remain perpetually functional with. The problem with drinking alcohol is that the more you do it, the better you get at doing it. You won't feel drunk but in reality it's because you're always so fucked up you can't tell the difference anymore. |
|
Used to have that problem.
Got to the point where other people started talking to me about it. Stepped back and started not drinking on "school nights". Then only after stuff got done on the weekends Then only on Saturday night Then every other saturday Then once a month Now I am pretty much a "have a beer with dinner once every few weeks/months" type of drinker. Control that shit, don't let it control you. |
