The center will include an "auditorium for police/fire and public use," a "mock city for burn building training and urban police training," an "Emergency Vehicle Operator Course for emergency vehicle driver training," a K-9 unit kennel and training, according to the center's website. The first phase of the training center is scheduled to open in late 2023. "This training facility will not only help boost morale, retention and recruitment of our public safety personnel, but will give us physical space to ensure that our officers and firefighters are receiving 21st century training, rooted in respect and regard for the communities they serve," said then-Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms when the center's lease agreement was approved. |

This is the GA domestic terrorism statute. I'm not sure it applies. Seems like there should be plenty of other statutes to charge them under, unless the DA is looking to get the charges thrown out "Domestic terrorism" means any felony violation of, or attempt to commit a felony violation of the laws of this state which, as part of a single unlawful act or a series of unlawful acts which are interrelated by distinguishing characteristics, is intended to cause serious bodily harm, kill any individual or group of individuals, or disable or destroy critical infrastructure, a state or government facility, or a public transportation system when such disability or destruction results in major economic loss, and is intended to: Intimidate the civilian population of this state or any of its political subdivisions; Alter, change, or coerce the policy of the government of this state or any of its political subdivisions by intimidation or coercion; or Affect the conduct of the government of this state or any of its political subdivisions by use of destructive devices, assassination, or kidnapping. |

The occupiers have repeatedly destroyed construction equipment and assaulted construction workers. The 23 arrests on Sunday now bring to total 42 members of the "Stop Cop City" movement charged with domestic terrorism. Rioters attacked law enforcement officers with firebombs during a raid in May last year and a man who drove into the area in November 2022 was nearly burned to death when his vehicle was set on fire. In January, a Florida man in the occupation, Manuel Esteban Paez Teran, was shot dead by police after he first shot at a Georgia state patrol trooper, who was seriously injured. The shooting was followed several days later by a violent attack in downtown Atlanta where businesses were smashed up and a police vehicle was set on fire. Simultaneously, other solidarity attacks have occurred in the U.S. On Jan. 21, the adult trans child of Democratic House Minority Whip Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) was arrested for vandalism and allegedly bloodying an officer. Police make the initial charges. They can be reduced, or elevated, later by the DA. And judges approve the warrants that the police obtain, the DA has nothing to say about it. They can chose not to prosecute, but that’s on them. Which maybe the case after public attention has wound down. Oh, we’re gonna reduce this to criminal trespass. |
