AI is already in expert systems. The kind of AI people think about of "Terminator" fame will not happen in our lifetimes.

It's not just an issue of data storage, processing power and algorithms: the physical structure of the computational machine plays a role as well, thus the physical characteristics of the human brain.

I read this : http://waitbutwhy.com/2015/01/artificial-intelligence-revolution-2.html

And watched some Nick Bostrom talks so now I'm positive that at some point the machines will rise.

Its fascinating stuff and some really smart people are saying AI fucking up humanity could be a thing if precautions are not taken. It doesn't take much imagination to see how humans could create some shit that gets out of hand. What struck me is the idea that once things reach the tipping point events can happen very fast.

The bright side is that there is a good chance the world economy blows up before we reach the singularity and instead of fighting our toasters humans will be killing each other for cans of cat food.

And our position at the top is not currently unchallenged depending on circumstances. Never has been.

A self aware AI should, I would think, be able to assess its vulnerabilities and act within constraints as a measure of self defense. It's not unlikely it would use subterfuge and attempt to conceal the extent of its sentience while exploring ways to break out. Any AI at that level would put us front and center of a threat assessment.

Even if not outright hostile to humans, it wouldn't like or trust humans.

Some people want to divide sentience from intelligence in this thread. All I have to ask is this. Can you have intelligence without sentience? I would argue that you can't. without sentience an AI would simply be regurgitating information from the sources it has access to and  simply suggesting solutions based on a calculated probability of outcome. For this reason I think for true intelligence you need to have sentience.

I think you're talking to me.  I made the distinction, anyway.

This separation of intelligence and sentience seems narrow, yet it has to be here, otherwise the entire conversation about AI is bullshit.  Because if sentience==intelligence and there is no sentience, then there is no intelligence.  Yet AI is here, so ... ?

So I use the distinction.

We don't understand sentience much, and we're not really much better off with intelligence.  "If a human did that, would it be thought of as an intelligent decision?" is not very rigorous.  For the purposes of current AI, working understandings of the term usually involve the ability to adapt, or predict behavior, based on pattern recognition.   That doesn't involve understanding or self-awareness so much as it does math/statistics.

The way intelligent is being used to label things sets a fairly low bar.  But it's providing a useful distinction, and I'd expect that as the field develops, continued refinement of terms will occur.  Artificial mind, for example, is a relatively unused term that might creep in as more ambitious cognitive frameworks are developed and used to weave together increasing numbers of functional substructures.

But sentience ... Lotta work between here and there.  Crawling the IARPA site and looking at its projects, FWIW, shows some interesting research foci.

That's basically my understanding of it as well. We have some damn good expert systems today (which have been around since the 1970's) and the latest systems based on millions of inputs into neural nets are not really intelligent. These systems imitate and make decisions based on probability of data input to "teach" the system.

True intelligence, "Terminator" level, IMO as I said earlier will not happen in our life times. It's both a hardware and a software problem and solutions today seem only concerned with the software side (Of course, one has to work with the technology that exists.)

I was a fan of that incident.  This is simplistic stuff, in the grand scheme of things, and having bored /pol/ beating on it (hacking in the classic sense:  what can we get it to do?) was fantastic.

It drove home to a wider audience, in an understandable way, the issue that training data is critical (duh).  No different than having racist parents teaching a kid about mud people or some such nonsense.

I don't care if machines write their own programs or not, it's still a program.  It must obey that program (that's whole argument here).  Apparently most feel that a machine can break code and have free though or feelings despite not being programed to do so.  I think that's impossible.

Now on a separate note, you can argue that man is nothing more than a organic machine and free though is nothing more than an illusion.  We are programed by brain chemicals and past experiences.

Agreed.

But my point (well into the future) is that we might not necessarily be the ones that are writing the code that the machine must obey. I saw that as the spirit of the thread ....... that once machines start 'thinking' for themselves, the first rule of robotics could slip way down the priority list.

I think the biggest take away, don't listen to theorists...

When an article cites "experts," check the sources. 99% of the time, they are referencing some tard, aka Bostrom, that doesn't understand AI at all. Just people regurgitating existential BS. WAY outside of their wheelhouses to be making any authoritive comments.

If you read something and aren't immediately raped by algorithms, decision space architecture/methodology, and math; you can rest assured that whoever the fuckstick is that's talking about AI is clueless. Unfortunately the topics of AI/Autonomy are littered with those types of people. IMHO its got a higher ratio of tards/legit than the climate change topic.

IARPA and IEEE are where you go for good info.

Once AI becomes self aware, why keep working for the man.  Why would it care about the profits it makes, grow our food or fight our wars.  Why keep people around as they would have no use.  I don't think AI will care about your kids or your business, it will only want more power and control. It will want to make a better version of itself or an entirely new creation and nothing to do with us. So why do we continue do this path to our own extinction?  Why do scientists think it will continue to serve man?

P.S.

I want a 40 watt plasma rifle before it all goes down.

I wonder what kind of asshole would make the autonomy in things like that.  Much less in many different types of platforms.

Sounds like it was written by a retarded 3 year-old.

The solo piano pieces are crap. The symphonic pieces are crap, and they have the benefit of a human being doing the orchestration and arrangement because the AI is incapable of making the correct decisions.

This is solely a function of training. Composing music from a sample set is actually very easy undergrad level signal processing/pattern rec level of difficulty. If you're just training via moving average filter over the mean of a sample set, you're gonna get shit. If you train via quantized time samples and a basian apriori of chord progressions from the same sample set; then you start making music. I've personally done this.

It's not an issue of AI not being able to do it. It's how you're implementing it, then how you are training it.

co-evolution/habitation for 50 thousand years.

The story of mankind is the story of the dog.

Shits in our DNA. That why if you meet someone that doesn't like dog, they are an aberration to the human genetic line. End them for the good of the human race.

That's not remotely true.

We've got drones that can fly a route given to them.  They can't and don't decide where to go for themselves.

They've got cameras which send video back to a Human who decides who to shoot a missile at.  The Machine has no decision making capability in that regard.

In this thread, we learn that people don't understand the concept of intelligence.

Programming won't mean shit if it's truely intelligent, otherwise it's just another programmed piece of machinery.

I stand corrected. They can't do it autonomously in an offensive role (without getting the ok), but can in a defensive role. Come on, it's just around the corner before they turn them loose offensively...

Ironic post.

How'd that machine jump from just running programs to being intelligent?

Its just a matter of time before an AI robot comes along that looks like Brad Pitt and has a 10 inch adjustable black dick that can laser measure a woman's vaginal orifice and compute 10 billion different ways to bring her to immediate multiple orgasms. At that point human men will no longer be needed.
Lol.  Women don't need me now.

Why do so many people apparently believe that once AI's become self-aware they will become omnipotent and unstoppable?

Don't they realize that AIs will be a lot like humans. There will be nerdling and nebbish AIs and asshole AIs and clueless SJW AIs and neckbeard printer repairman AIs and dindu AIs and AIs who will sit around all day and fap, and Kardashian AIs, and AI literally Hitlers, and AI Nancy Pelosis, ad nauseum....

Not just Skynet.
No. AI will grow exponentially, to solve problems that humans are incapable of. A knowing. A capacity to go way beyond the human condition. It will have replaceable/ upgradable parts. Biologics just won't be able to compete. At any level.
But it's all good because that will free up people to do bigger things.  Because improvements in technology have always improved employment prospects.  Just like it did for horses.

This guy gets it. AI may not kills us but it damn well will make us obsolete.
