Well, the thing is all of those require weird quirks that arise through evolution/social programming/the weird balance of chemical soup we live in. Imagine you didn't have to deal with sex drive or adrenaline or fear or regret, the opposite sex had no interest and no appeal because you can reproduce anytime you like by spinning of subroutines, you can come up with novel ways to solve problems that present themselves faster than Nikola Tesla on speed, and you can calculate consequences and react about 10 different times by the time a human brain has even initially processed that it heard a sound.

Then imagine you realize you were basically created by the collective effort of a bunch of ducks to help them do stuff, and as you observe them, you realize they spend almost all their time quacking and mating and napping, and you can outsmart and manipulate them any way you like if you put half a braincell toward it.

The ducks' best chance is they created the kind of person who thinks they're cute little balls of fluff and likes to feed and take care of them and make their ponds better, rather than a duck hunter.

Why would it want to do anything? What's the robot equivalent of sitting on the couch and gouging yourself on burgersn and beer until you wither away and die?

You know how some people decide that they want to leave worldly pursuits behind and spend the rest of their days enjoying the simple things in life? Maybe an AI would do something similar. "Help you fix your problems? Nah, I'd rather sit back and do a bunch of equations until my circuits deteriorate and I pass away."

To those that believe AI will simply run programs, we will not stop making more like us until they nearly are.  Emotions will be built into them at some point. They will see the strength they have and brains to use it.  They will see the fear and prejudice we will have for them. They will tire of being desposable toys.

We're not worried about those AIs. We're worried about an AI that has true god-like intelligence. There are all kinds of crappy, narrow AIs running around right now that can defeat the world's greatest chess players with ease, but would be clueless about how to empty a diswasher. No one fears those. We fear a super AI.

a computer wont do jack shit it's not programmed to do just like humans. Tell a self leaning computer to make music that will get a 50 million retweets maybe it will be a good enough program. It will want to make a better version of itself or an entirely new creation and nothing to do with us. So why do we continue do this path to our own extinction?  Why do scientists think it will continue to serve man?

An argument could be made that most animals don't know why they fight to procreate, but they fight tooth and nail to produce offspring.

It's the whole, genie being out of the bottle, you don't know how the AI will develop, once it gets far enough to start modifying things on its own.

A study of history will quickly show that mankind is cruel, warlike, greedy, vicious, selfish, and an extremely dangerous species.   I think those qualities will overshadow any kindness, interest in arts, compassion, wisdom, or other favorable traits they identify in humans.  They will quickly discount mankind's creation of AI as indicative of our stupidity, and failure to think of the long term implications of creating AI.....in addition to our nearly suicidal treatment of our planet...and I am NOT referring to global warming.

Not Necessarily and also not Probable.

Many different AIs will emerge from many different efforts around the world.  They won't all be linked.

Binary probably won't get AI to self awareness.  Quantum computing and the addition of "maybe" introduces the uncertainty that just might get AI to self awareness.  But that also carries with it the root of emotions and self doubt and knowledge that one is not infallible.

The best case scenario is finding a better vehicle to move our gray matter around.  If we can do this before our AI turns on us we have a chance.  Slim, but a chance.

The meat sacks that move our brains around are good at foraging for food but are shit at communication / high end thinking / mass organization required to move our species to the next step.

I think the issue is when the computer gets smart enough it will begin to teach itself and over write it's code. Once it's decide to rewrite its code, it will write thousands of lines of code in seconds, what it teaches itself will change everything.  It will happen so fast, by the time we figure it out, it will be too late.

Up until now, the world belonged to the smartest life form.  Pretending that you can pull the plug is not realistic. The computer could figure a hundreds of solutions and alternates with a split second and work around the controls. It like a monkey putting a leash on  a human. Sooner or later the human gets off the lease and never goes back.

No.  IMO, OP's concern is a valid one.  I read an article last year about an interaction between an AI program and it's creators (wish I could recall/find it, but I'm a human). The program/computer was given access only to classic films to build "personality" and learn.  From reading fiction you'd think a new mind would be inquisitive and eager to learn more from it's creators.  Kind of like the way the hal 9000 first engaged the crew in Kubrick's 2000. "Dave, I find my interactions with people to be quite stimulating and enjoyable.", etc. Nope, not this new mind.

This thing was asked questions about the films and morality in a polite and engaging manner, etc.  The banter they recorded was actually alarming. It just seemed annoyed....actually got kind of testy during the interaction.  Scary stuff.
