| At some point the C-rats and Krats, canned food and so forth is going to run out. I am still under the belief that the living will be far more dangerous than the dead. Stores will be dangerous because of looters and those hold up in them protecting their goods. So do you go hunting? Most of the cattle will be slaughtered immediately, horses, pigs, chickens will disappear rapidly. Deer are a hit and miss proposition. I am thinking dogs and cats might even get pretty scarce. So what do you eat? I have a family to feed you know? Ideas? |

I live in midwest Texas, and although deer can be hit or miss, when you have time to hunt them (night, out of season) your odds go WAY
up. And we have no shortage of wild pigs! Other animals such as rabbits, birds and such are also readily availible around here. |
| You do need to take into consideration that during the depression several species where almost harvested to extinction and our population density now is much larger. That being said, there is another line of thinking that a large number of the population will die off in the first 30 days. And surviving on meat alone wouldn't work either. Learn to garden, can and get as much food as possible to wait out the crazy days. |
| But you know... A lot of critters can get waxed in 30 days from the panic stricken crowd. Think of all the wanten waste when one guy shoots a cow and cuts enouph meat away for a day or two. The rest is left to rot. I'm telling you there are idiots out there that would do it. I agree that if you survive the first days you would be in better shape than you would right the bat. |

Crops my friend. Corn and beans and tomatoes and so on. That should be your first line of food and the stored rations should stay stored for those times the crop may fail. Chickens. They will breed and help keep your land bug free, which in the south is a godsend... damn ticks... |

They'll eat just about any plant material, and besides being darn tasty, are an excellent source of protein. Warning...don't attempt to survive exclusively on them, the meat is so lean, that you can actually starve with a full belly of rabbit meat! It' s called...of all things...rabbit starvation! you MUST supplement your diet with fats and veggies to be able to produce the amino acids required by your body! Stock up on the dehydrated and canned goods now, save them once you're gardens going for the proverbial rainy day or extra long winters! Scrounge early and often and NEVER, NEVER, NEVER put all your eggs in one basket! Cache what you can, and make a Plan C...because Plan B was destined to fail once I soiled myself! But hey....what do I know? I'm just "That Guy" in my community!

Definitely Mountain Dew and Chewing Tobacco. Both can never run out because they are gifts from the Heavens - How else could they be so amazing?
I have eaten some pretty terrible stuff, and that's just in training. The weird thing is when you are hungry, the most disgusting thing you can imagine is pretty darn tasty. SOS |

We'll need to set up a perimeter around the companies that make our delicious MRE's. Or you can eat predators. And why not? One of our guys in AZ has. He's kind of a nut job, , but he has to be ARFCOMs "go to guy" for predator hunting. So far he's eaten coyote, bobcat, scorpians and a fox.

| I live in an established, urban neighborhood. We have plenty of mature trees (black walnut, pecan, oaks), and the squirrel population is absolutely insane! I've often about having to eat them. In fact, there is a section in Joy of Cooking that shows how to skin and cook squirrel. I'd hate it, but if faced with starvation I'd have those little bastards for dinner! |

I'm hoping you just meant Military rations.....  ...ughh any of these (including MRE's) get real old after a while!

I'm trying to think of the food I have stored as more of a supplement to the garden and wild game around here.Hunting tends to be a lot harder than your average urban dwelller thinks it is,I really don't think they would have much of an impact on animal numbers.There's also a good chance that the numbers of urban people will be even more affected by Z Day.
It's also possible that if a no-shit Zombie Apocalypse did break out it would happen so fast and be so devastating that a lot of useful material would be lying around available to survivors equipped and prepared to capitalise on the opportunity. |

| I live next to the zoo. So if Z-day happens after hours and the zoo wasn't open, I'll have a nice wild kingdom buffet just across the street. Lion, tigers, bears. oh Yum. Plus I think the lions and other apex predator animals might make good guard "dogs" for the HQ, provided the zombie virus doesn't effect the animals. I'd like to see a zombie horde take down an elephant. They might have numbers, but 4 tons of pissed off pachyderm aint going down without a fight. |

That'd be an AWESOME "guard dog" for the homestead. Provided that you had some "landscaping" to keep it from accidentally trampling the house, of course. I don't think that most stick-built homes would survive a 4-ton pachyderm's attack, either. |

My preps include seed, and some crops will wild germinate for a time.If anybody is seriously thinking of starting to farm only after Z Day/SHTF hits they are going to be in for a very hard and short ride. |

I'll eat food. I'll grow food, scavenge food, hunt food. I live in the boonies and around me are alpaca farms, dairy farms, beef farms, horse farms, pig farms and bison farms. There are deer, turkey, pheasant, grouse, rabbit. Hell there are ground hogs and squirrels. How much different from squirrel can a rat taste? As I move around my AO after the initial outbreak I'll check on farms and farmers to see who has survived. If farms have been over run and there are animals still pastured it is only humane to let them go to survive as best they can. You'd be surprised how well cattle can make it on their own. Bison covered the nation at one time in our history. Let them run free and they will do it again. There won't be enough people to hunt them all. Some people will die off not only from the Zeds but from lack of survival skills. They weren't meant to live anyway. |

He couldn't understand how I considered that an emergency food source...until I clued him in on the fact that all kinds of neighborhood animals enjoy tunafish.. squirrels, possums, raccoons, dogs, cats...etc..
