I need to point something out.
People are computing the death rate of 17 deaths from 500 confirmed cases. This is not accurate and a common misconception. Most people that are dying have been symptomatic for around 2 weeks or so before they die. Confirmed cases precede death cases by about 2 weeks So to get an accurate death rate per confirmed case ( not all cases will be confirmed, hopefully there are lots of people that don't get very sick and don't seek medical attentions, but we don't know this yet ) you have to divide the number of deaths today by the number of cases from 2 weeks ago. 2 weeks ago there were much less than 100 cases. But let's use 100 to make the math easier. 17/100 is 17% death rate. It is probably closer to 20% or more. ETA: as of a short time ago, confirmed cases are up to 582. It is expanding exponentially. 2 days ago it was 291. |

It may be a few more weeks before we have much in the way of numbers to understand where we really stand with this unknown virus. Hopefully it's a big nothing that goes away quickly... hopefully. But the fact that they quarantined a whole city of 11m + in population is unprecedented in recent history and shows they're more concerned than they've let on up to now. We'll see... |
