When I was a bit younger, this thread would have hit real close to home.
A business venture panned out and I sold out. I blew through, well, damn near everything on travel and good times.
Luckily I didn't get too stupid and spend what I didn't have. Instead of having to dig out, I get to do it all over again

Back in the day I used to date this realtor chick.  She sold lots of big "McMasion" homes. She told me that it was pretty common to go back a year later and visit her clients and find the homes pretty much empty...no furniture or anything on the walls. They could barely keep up with the payments......they would rather have a huge house, and lease/finance fancy cars, and buy expensive clothes than have furniture in their homes.

I kinda did this based on the fact that I KNEW I could sell the place for AT LEAST what I paid for it because of the neighborhood and the local school system.

I was betting on both future earnings and inflation to drop the percentage of my income that house payments were. For the first couple of years a night out meant a slice of pizza and a coke at the local stand but inside a couple of years and a couple of raises it got much easier. In fact by scrimping and a modest inheritance the 30 year note was paid off in about seven years.

No, those things are not really "lifestyle changing", what they are a drain on resources unless you are ultra weathy.

You only have so many heartbeats and all of that stuff you spent so much money on, won't bring you happiness.

The Vanderbilt's learned this when they owned Biltmore Estate.

As a famous singer of a band once said, "money won't buy you happiness, but it CAN buy off unhappiness" and truer words have never been spoken.

There are no U-hauls behind a hearse, but by the same token, you don't want to be flat fucking broke on your deathbed if you can help it.

Its just math. Everyone spends from their resources on things that make them happy.

It is absurd to say the following is not lifestyle changing:

Sitting around your pool with family/friends, in Texas "Hey, remember that little hole in the wall that served the best italian food ever in NOLA?, lets go" (one phone call, and 30 minutes later you are at your plane ready to go)  Two hours later you are sitting in that restaurant with your family and friends.  Everyone gets back home in time for normal bed time.

If the math of your life allows for that, it is something novel.  It is a level of movement and comfort in a timeframe that is not available to people without it.  We can make up countless examples.

The fact that we all end up in the ground doesnt change that.  People who build, maintain and fly rich peoples planes need their jobs as well.   Someone living a "humble" life that is brought joy by going to eat at his favorite place is not morally better than the guy using his jet to go eat at his on a whim.

Like everyone keeps saying on here, these "Arfcom millionaires".... with their $15,000 Cessna and $5000 "Rolex" that nobody can tell from a nice Swiss fake.

OK, so you got an airplane...That don't impress me much...If it impresses you, then great...You pay for annuals, hangar fees, fuel and multiple other things.... I could probably swing that if I wanted to make it my only major hobby.

I flew in a helicopter last year near Tyndall AFB...It was $300 bucks and that's fine....Kinda like a ride at Disney. I am not spending tens of thousands of dollars doing that every year and making sure I have health insurance, a retirement, vehicles, insurance, a place to live, and a thousand other things that normal people do...If I were Bill Gates I wouldn't buy a personal airplane....It just doesn't impress me/

And the fact that "we all end up in the ground" does matter...Limited number of heartbeats for all of us.

I worked in the nat gas field in western Colorado from start to crash.  I made more $ as an electrician than I ever imagined I could.   I wanted to blow a lot of money on dumb shit, but the wife was pushing to pay off the house.  I bought way too many guns, but still paid off the house.  Saved a bunch of dough too, and by then I was running a shop full of electricians.

Had plenty of young guys making more money than they ever had,
And they bought all the toys.  New truck+20k worth of crap.  ATVs, boats, Harleys.     Then the layoffs, then the repos.  Same story everywhere when energy crashes.   Holy cow it was glorious when it was rolling hard tho.

No where did I speak of impressing people.  I was quantifying lifestyle.  Not attitude. X dollars buys Y things.  It doesnt matter how you feel about that, it just is.   "Oh, I forgot, today is that awesome thing I really wanted to do 1000 miles away"  and 3 hours later you are doing it.  That is a lifestyle issue. It has nothing to do with impressing anyone. Hell, it is done in private.

You are insisting on finding a place to put your feelings in a technical issue.

I have no idea why you are trying to make "X dollars buys Y stuff" a philosophical debate with me.

Again, you are trying to insert how you feel into a technical issue.

To touch on your issue though, If "we are going to die" is some reason not to do something, where is the line?  If it is somehow "wrong" to have a private plane, because "we all die" then why is it ok to have or do anything?  Why do you insist that it is about showing off? My entire issue (the technical issue) centers around the lifestyle, not the show off aspect.

There is a math to every lifestyle.  EVERY LIFESTYLE.  The poor and the rich.  The fact that we all die one day does not change that.

*sigh*

The conversation is not about who has the most.  It is about personal enjoyment.   There is no moral difference between a guy who uses his private jet to go enjoy his favorite burger and a guy taking the bus to enjoy his.   They both will die one day.  The guy with the jet in not someone "wrong" for having the jet becuse he cant take it with him when he dies.

Trying to make absurd assumptions about me, or turning it into a showing off issue is not that conversation.   Again, you are trying to find a place to insert your feelings into a technical issue.   Your argument is ultimately nothing matters...well, if nothing matters, you are a hypocrite for anything you do other than go sit in a corner until death overcomes you.

I get that, but it is not the same when you have people to take care of everything.   In many situations, money can buy your time back.   If you have to do it yourself, sure, one would be wise to get rid of excess that causes more work.

Again, if the math works out, one need not worry about the pool, yard, whatever.  it simply gets taken care of.

A couple of years ago I met a guy that was getting married and the father of the bride offered either a 50K (or some such shit) wedding OR 50K down payment on a home.

She opted for the wedding and he dropped her like a stone right then and there.

The father actually took HIS side.

He made the right choice.

Yeah. Me in 2009. My lawyer emailed my wife’s lawyer “they have obviously been living far beyond their means for some time.”  She didn’t want to get a job, and just shopped like there was no tomorrow. I could have stopped it, but then I would have just gotten divorced quicker. I was so stupid. $40k in credit card debt and no assets to speak of. Fast forward to the present, remarried to a responsible woman and planning to pay off our mortgage early. With my ex I knew I would eventually be walking to work in flip flops in my old age. Living beyond your means is generally living in denial that money is logical and not magical, and loving someone does not mean spending money on them.

Weird because there have already been self admitted stories of financial foolishness, but reading is for fags. Maybe, someone will read these and think, "huh, that sounds like me" and turn it around before it's too late.

You can’t sell a house with a general poa. You have to have a specific Poa that grants that authority.

I think there’s more to the story, as there usually is.

How could she have sold "their" house? It would have been in both of their names?

Power of attorney

Shit can get messy.....If the guy really wanted to go after her, he could spend thousands on lawyers to get her to pay it back.  And then she still might not.  Divorce really just fucks over guys in the US.  The courts don't give a shit about what happens to the men.  If it had been the other way around, the courts would have wrecked that guy for selling the house, etc...

You’d be shocked at what a county recorder will accept to transfer title in real estate. Then it’s off to court.

a buddy of mine / friend from the national guard got into contracting during our bosnia deployment around 2002. he started working for brown and root IIRC, gone for long periods of time making big tax free deployment money and planning on doing that for 5-10 years and then retiring at around 40 years old. he put pretty much everything he made into savings.

about 2 or 3 years into it, he comes home and discovers his wife was tired of being alone and was gone. she had apparently sold their paid off house that was a wedding gift from his / their parents, cleaned out every penny of the savings from his 2-3 years of contracting and had filed for divorce.

I hope she is a "missing person".....

That kind of shit happens a lot more than you know of.

I was at an airport and saw a young E-6 returning from the sandbox a couple of years ago with the biggest WTF look I have ever seen on a human being.

I asked him if he was OK and he told me he was coming home to literally NOTHING.

He didn't even have a place to sleep `that night other than a motel.

Poor bastard didn't know about it until he was getting ready to leave for home.

Here he was packing overseas to go home and be met at the airport by his wife and kids and someone came in and broke the news to him his wife had taken the kids, sold the house and left.

Pretty common story around here is grandparents build up an estate through agriculture or another "blue collar" business, the parents are college educated, did their own thing, and are completely uninvolved in the family business other than cashing checks, and their children end up trying to start on their own while also having to manage a multimillion dollar family business that has not been managed by anyone else for over 30 years. These guys are now in their mid 30s and some of them are doing well, some have cashed out, and some of them have managed to blow 100+ years of equity building on stupid stuff like brodozers, cookie cutter mansions, $50,000 football tailgates, and beach vacations.

Do I win the top prize?

My stupid ass father.

5.  GMC Motorhome
6.  11 Harleys at the same time (paid over list for each one from Stubb's or Mancuso Harley)
7.  $120,000 home entertainment system (Martin Logan, Mark Levinson, Krell) + $80,000 home entertainment system (previous system that he only used for 2 years before tossing it in the storage room McIntosh)
8.  15 Rolexes (President's, Daytona, Submariner, Miligauze, etc.)
9.  Bought over 50 vehicles in his lifetime (practically gave them away when he got tired of them, bought all at list price from Timmers Chevrolet aka Monument Chevrolet).

If you had the cash, would you pay off a house in full day 1, or make a down payment and mortgage the rest. Why?

Money is basically free right now, so smartest move is to get the loan and invest the rest.
