I was always under the impression that it was the opposite. marines have always had more money per rifleman than the army it was just invested more heavily in training than in equipment. When I was in CMA was $200 a year. A pair of cammies was$48 not to mention all the BS you had to buy just for inspections. Closer to 1k a year spent out of pocket between all the shit we had to buy out of pocket. That is obviously a failure in policy. If you're spending $1000 a year out of pocket for uniform inspections, the biggest budget in the world wouldn't solve the obvious stupidity going on at higher levels. A pair of ACU's costs about $140, and lasts 6 months, tops, if you hit the field a lot. with the new and improved 670-1 heading our way, I'm sure we too will get to enjoy wasted money due to uniform inspections that will make the command feel good. Inspections were only a small portion of it. We did not get issued cammies, we had to buy them. Do you know how many pairs of cammies a grunt can fuck up in a year? Lots. Pack strap broke on your pack, yup at the PX to buy a new one, cause going to supply meant you may wind up with one worse than the one you broke. Just how it was, if you were not in the .mil before 9/11 Im glad you dont understand this. If you were, then you know what we are talking about. |

Every fuckin one some Good idea fairy decides to put 200-300 bucks worth of "required" gear that isn't issued, won't be issued and never will be issued and half of it can't be sourced at the PX and has to purchased on the economy. It does get crazy especially for those highly paid Pvt/PFC/Lcpl's. |

I remember one time the 1stSgt. asked each platoon to submit a "want" list for a month long trip the big island. We put everything on it. 4 rolls of duct tape, 3 boxes of chem lights in each color, flares, many many cases of ammo, 550 cord, etc. Anything three Squad Leaders and a salty Platoon Sgt. could come up with. We left our boot Lt. out of the fun.
We got one roll of tape and five red chem lights.
Those SNCO's better brush up on their LCpl. underground skills and start giving hip pocket classes on the art. "Gear Adrift Is A Special Gift" - words to live by in the time of tight budgets.

When I was a MP at MCAS El Toro ('94-'96, during the Clinton era drawdowns), we had a number of old, cast-off Army Chevy Caprices in the stable.
They were white, with a lovely OD stripe down the side. The AC was long dead, the defrosters didn't work, the windshield wipers didn't work, and we had doorbell buzzers mounted to the dash to activate the horn because there were holes in the steering wheels where the airbags used to be. They were rolling shitboxes to be sure, but, on the plus side, with the exhaust leak you stopped caring after a while.
The tires were bald, so we ended up putting three of 'em into telephone poles in the rain.... prompting an investigation as the suspicion was that the crashes were intentional (my roomie crashed one; the fucking shop took the wreck and put brand new tires on it; they were going to burn him, but he'd thought ahead at the time and had taken his own pictures of the bald tires). Weapons training consisted of a lot of "Budda budda JAM! Hey, I got you! Fuck you, I got you FIRST!" Oh, and Marines don't steal. But we sure as hell ACQUIRE!

Items that were TAP issue but above and beyond the number issued The ever popular PT unit specific T-shirt 2 each At times: C and D batteries whether you needed them or not. Electric razors (yeah blades weren't good enough) + x amount of the required batteries. Of course since everybody wants an inspection at some point in the pre-pre-pre inspection a certain portion will have to buy cammies, boots, skivvies because someone deems them faded or unserviceable somehow, whether or not they are.
