Fouling or debris of about .005" or more can depress the sear and cause simultaneous elevation of the safety lever lock; the latter condition may create enough clearance for an uncommanded discharge without a trigger pull comparable to the Mischief Machine and VeryAverage experiments. He seems to have identified the debris trap at approximately the same time Mischief Machine and I started looking into that as the cause. I think he makes an error in attributing it to too big of gaps at the rear of the slide, pistols have gaps there and they are necessary for proper clearance. Junk on that sear shelf could conceivably be “scraped off” by the striker during cycling and be caught directly in the sear/striker engagement creating a condition in which bumping the slide can release the sear. I would say this is a very similar, but still different, failure mode. So we’re now up to three different specific ways the sear can be released because of the debris trap created by the sear shelf. |

I bought a 320 when they first came out and happily ditched it some years ago. And he is stating that the problem with this gun is IF you use a takedown safety lever from a 10mm or .45 AND using it in particular way. Which he has never seen. And sounds unlikely. And like police departments and the military probably do not even have those parts in stock. And they would have to take apart a 9mm and use the wrong one. Armorers are careful to take apart a weapon and use all the same parts again off the bench. Just crazy. There are multiple videos of people touching or brushing against a holstered 320 and it going off. Dozens of lawsuits and they are talking about a rare possibility that they have never seen. The Ross rifle thing was actually possible as you could put the same parts together wrong. And then it was unsafe. |

The Ross rifle thing was actually possible as you could put the same parts together wrong. And then it was unsafe. So this possible issue was talked about a month or two ago here - sometime after it ended, in the big GD thread. The rumor was that SIG may have accidentally shipped some 320s w/ the wrong takedown safety lever. For him to acknowledge this problem is interesting. |

I think my main source of doubt on this is that if this explains it, then it’s repeatable and easily observed. Showing there’s a problem if someone puts the wrong parts in the pistol… okay, were the wrong parts in these pistols which experienced UDs? I haven’t seen anyone provide evidence that potential problem affected any of the involved pistols. |

This one is interesting. Does slide movement cause disconnector movement, and that causes striker safety disengagement? His theory is about a slightly out of battery slide while holstered, causing an unengaged striker safety. Add a full mag pushing up on the slide creating less sear / striker engagement; bump the gun.... UD. ![]() Sig P320 Theory on Potential Cause of Accidental Discharges (Expanded) |

Unfortunately nothing will bring back the dead or even uncripple you, but hopefully other people start stop using these things. Prior to the day it "ended" I was not a Sig hater, but was disappointed by them not taking seriously what was obviously a problem. Every manufacturer, especially the larger it is & longer its been around will have some bad product. Whether its a design flaw, manufacturing problem or whatever, it happens. The thing is how they handle the problem. Sig is kindly providing what will be a case study in how NOT to handle such a problem. |
