[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Steyr AUG at the Range-- Who says chrome lined barrels can't be precise? (Page 1 of 2)

If I was starting over I'd get a Steyr AUG. I brought an MSAR Aug when they came out, and I remember the mag catch was made of plastic that took a set after a while, forever locking the magazine into the stock. I sent mine back for the fix before this happened to mine and they fixed it free. I'm guessing the Steyr would have no such issue. |
Quoted: They only stopped selling them with CL barrels a few years ago. I would think Criterion would have something to say about accuracy and chrome lining. Ya, we use Criterion Core chrome lined barrels on our R2000 builds, they are wicked accurate. I have seen STG58s with factory chrome bores shoot very accurate too. Nice shooting with the AUG, thats one of the rifles I still want. |
| An interesting factoid about Steyr’s trigger testing I never realized is that they actually destroy the stock in the drop testing process according to ARID who makes an aluminum trigger for the AUG and is the reason they sell them with the disclaimer they won’t guarantee it’ll pass that test. This is probably also the reason the Geissele trigger ultimately failed their test and was never produced. |

They only stopped selling them with CL barrels a few years ago. I would think Criterion would have something to say about accuracy and chrome lining. Wait... The current Steyr AUG doesn't have a chrome lined barrel? |

The AUG is surprisingly accurate, my biggest issue is getting a clean break with the 10lb trigger pull. Mine is an older one with the chrome barrel. Glad I grabbed one before they went QPQ and the stocks started cracking. They need to get that shit fixed, it seems every couple of weeks someone posts a pic like this in the AUG groups. Quoted: I’ve not been keeping up with them enough to know if the cause of that is known? For a while people thought it was because they stopped rounding the corners where the takedown lever goes but Steyr started rounding them again and they are still breaking, mostly the NATO versions. There's also some talk about it being suppressor related. You're supposed to get a special gas valve if you want to shoot it suppressed but many claim they didn't shoot it with a can and they still broke. |
Quoted: Off the top of my head I believe the barrels are now being produced domestically and are nitrided. If you see one with the 1/2-28 threaded barrel it’s not CL. Correct. But even those barrels are accurate. My 20 inch one can easily and repeatedly ring steel at 600 meters if you can dial in the range. |

Quoted: I have a chrome-lined AR barrel that has been amazingly accurate, but I paid dearly for it, long ago. (Denny's Operator) Having said that - those are great groups and astounding when considering that they come from a 1.5x optic. I had one of those uppers with that barrel. It shot very well but sold it to a friend in order to go with a lighter set-up. |
Quoted: Any trigger mods? Original trigger pack and 1.5 optic? its you and not as much the gun. Most shooters wont be able to get that. with the Steyr red trigger springs that bring the pull weight down to around 6.5lbs. With the original springs groups were about 0.3" bigger |
Quoted: In my experience the trigger is the biggest thing holding them back. Simple way to improve it. Unhook one spring leg, Still 100% reliable. Lightens the pull about 40%. as Bullpups go it already has a good trigger. A little graphite lube on the plastic guts and it's fine. |
Quoted: No one with a SOCOM barrel. And, we're off! ![]() The SOCOM M4 Block II barrel: Magic? ...or tragic? (Facts and rumors - M4 SOCOM barrel) |
Quoted: I have the same exact gun (mfg in 2005 iirc) The trigger while not great is quite predictable once you get used to it. The biggest complain is the older style reticle lacking the inner crossair… it’s damn impossible to aim accurately ![]() Blasphemy! Everything inside the donut o' death dies. |

A change to the polymer blend, I think. 40+ years without that ever happening, then the rona bullshit happened, and around 2019-2020 some folks started seeing stocks crack. The fix has been to make round relief cuts to the corners of the takedown button cutout before it happens, or ensure you’ve got an older stock. New pictures Every week? Where, what “aug groups?” I only know of a few incidents mentioned here on arfcom. |
