Until 1978, he served in several Explosive Ordonance Disposal units. He was deployed to vietnam for one year in 1970. In 1978, he volunteered to join the newly formed 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment – Delta (Airborne). During his service in the Special Forces, Vining participated in several big operations. During the Operation Eagle Claw, he survived a plane crash. In 1983, he was deployed during Operation Urgent Fury. During Operation Desert Storm, he was stationed in Ar’ar, Saudi Arabia, and in 1994 he was the Senior Enlisted Advisor for Joint Task Force 188 on the USS AMERICA during Operation Uphold Democracy. |

Matern will assume the responsibilities of Chief of Staff for Operations for Canadian Forces Expeditionary Command in August. Matern is a native of Quebec. He joined the Canadian armed forces in 1977 through the Royal Military College of Canada. He has served in mechanized infantry, light and special forces in Europe and Canada and has risen to become a commanding officer of a light infantry unit and Canada's premier Special Forces Unit - Joint Task Force 2. Matern has the distinction of being the first Canadian officer employed as deputy commanding general with the XVIII Abn. Corps and Fort Bragg. |

I guess it's a different world (for now)? We had some Russians come over for a few days. They didn't see anything that normal civilians don't see all the time. They were more or less glared at and kept in the dark while we pretended to be nice to them. Maybe that was just me doing that though.

I guess it's a different world (for now)? I wonder if this training event was linked to the 2011 agreement allowing the US and NATO to ship armor and equipment from Afghanistan back to Europe on overland routes through Russia as part of the drawdown. Russia has recently shut down those routes in retaliation for the diplomatic pressure arising from the crisis in the Ukraine. Also, 10th SFG(A) was scheduled to go to Russia for a reciprocal training event in 2013. If that happened, it was never publicized. Huff Post Russian VDV

One of my associates is a Russian colonel, who is former Spetsnaz. He was the UNMIK Military Chief of Staff in Kosovo for my last tour, and as I was frequently manning the ECP at Camp Bondsteel, we interacted quite a bit. We get along great, and have even had "tea" together a few times, but we definitely don't talk shop, except for parachuting and firearms. A very likeable and professional man, and I have no doubt that if it was his duty to kill me, he would do so without hesitation, and I, him. Or at least I'd try. It's just the way it is. He gave me several Russian souvenirs when I left Kosovo, and a standing invite to jump with his guys, if I ever make it to Russia. For all I know, he may be in the Ukraine by now.
He was going to "pin" my Russian parachute badge on for me after I got back from getting it in Slovakia, but as I broke my leg, I was sent directly home to Thailand. I think it might have hurt more than the leg. He's a STRONG guy!
As far as trusting him? I trust him a lot more than my interpreter. I also trust him to do his job if we were on opposite sides. |

Pronto, a Special Operations Forces Multi Purpose Canine, successfully jumped out of a CH-47 Chinook helicopter during Emerald Warrior training exercise at Hurlburt Field, Florida in this March 1, 2011 photograph. This was the first time a dog jumped with a team, allowing members to utilize him in real world situations. Emerald Warrior 2011 is a U.S. Special Operations Command-sponsored, multiservice exercise designed to leverage lessons learned from Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom to provide trained and ready forces to combatant commanders. The New York Times and other United States media have reported that a military canine accompanied Navy SEAL Team Six commandos into a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan in a raid that killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
