I had a 1942 Willys completely restored with an inoperable .30 MG. I was in Iraq in 2005 and Katrina washed her away

I still have the 1919 at my moms house. Everytime I see it or see a Willys thread I get sad.

HA HA, my S-i-L bought one for $50.00 , we put a battery in it, poured a little gas down the carb.

He drove it about 7 miles home.

I'm afraid this won't help much.

My dad's '48:

We went to Toledo to get a completely new body for it and toured the old Willy's factory.

There's not a bolt on it that he hasn't turned.

He got his for less than $1000, I believe.  I think he's in it over $10K at this point, and the restoration has been going on for about 10 years, whenever he has time to work on it.

I was at my mechanics today who has a 46 Willys; I believe I mentioned this somewhere around here last year around this time. I thought yhis thing had sold because it just vanished the one day. He stored it in the back of his garage, out of sight, because of all the offers he was recieving. He dropped his price for me by 1k down to 1k.

The frame is beautiful. Needs body work. Hasn't been inspected or driven since '67 but was barn and garage stored. Has everything except the steering box.

Have the cash and the wifes seal of approval. This grand is suddenly burning a hole in my pocket. I will get these photos hosted shortly, I'm currently chasing down my last code after a motor swap.

Give me 30 minutes, I'll be back.

Father in law just gave me and the wife a 46 Willys Jeep that has been in their family since about '60,  the best he can remember.  I'm tearing it down in my garage now.  Haven't gotten very deep into it,  but it's in decent condition.  I'm still going to replace the body tub as its pretty rough and has a few rust spots.  The frame and drive train are in very good condition.

You can get a lot of parts you can most likely need from Kaiser Willys.

Have fun with it.  I am with ours.

OP, I was around $3k into my '52, and that's counting the price of the Jeep itself, a full rebuild on the L-134, small parts and pieces here and there, paint, and this is what I ended up with. Drove it almost daily, including winters, for several years. Couldn't tell you the number of people I had, just at random, come up and ask about it, or want a ride in it, or pictures of themselves and/or their kids sitting in it. And no, the oil spot underneath it isn't from the Jeep, it's from a '76 F100 that leaked from more places than not.

The little Nissan truck I drive daily now sucks, and has cost me more money, in a shorter period of time, than the Willys ever did.

I even scabbed together a fake M2HB to put in the back, but I never finished the mount.

Well it's. Military one so that comes at a premium, it's war time so $, it's all still correct so that's more $ and it's restored so all in about $19,000.

But you can find a nice project for $6,500 , and all parts are available  you could even build one from scratch.

I worked at Scarborough's Garage in Nags Head NC as a mechanic in the 1970s (long gone; Jim was a Jeep dealer through Willys, Kaiser Willys, American Motors, Chrysler).

Ford made Jeeps to the same specs in WWII, like Colt and Singer 1911s, or Inland and Rockola M-1 Carbines.

I bought an M35A2 in 2010? for 670 dollars.

In running, driving condition.  With winch.  AND it was a C-turbo "whistler."   Paint was a bit rough, but otherwise in great shape.

Had the GL guy pull start it with a fork lift, then drove it over to the loading dock to pick up a load of surplus boots, then drove it home 120 miles.  At 50 mph.

Mechanically, there isn't anything on it you couldn't do yourself, with a good shop manual, and a good set of tools.

OP's is a civilian CJ-2a.  The WWII Willys Jeeps were MBs and the Ford's were GPWs (which is where the name "Jeep" came from).  The GPWs either had "Ford" or the Ford "F" on every single part (including bolts) because Henry was pissed that the military went with the Willys offering rather than his, and then the gov't contracted Ford to pick up the slack and manufacture his competitor's product because Willys couldn't handle the necessary output.

Yup. I can't wait to take this thing to Bantam next year!

It being an A2 is still unconfimed but I'll be looking up ways to better identify this guy today. I can't believe I own a piece of history, I'll be calling Chrysler today looking for more details.

It's a 2a.  It's not an M-38, and it's definitely not a MB/GPW.  I'm not sure any CJ-2as were produced specifically for US military use, I haven't ever heard of that.

Eta: http://www.thecj2apage.com/history.html
Somewhere in there Olive Drab was added. Probably sometime in 1946 or 1947 as it is listed in the CJ-2A, 3A parts manual. It is assume by many that this color was used on models for military export. It should also be noted that a couple of foreign countries order CJ2A’s for use in their military. South Africa and the Swiss Armies are the only two I have been able to get a reference on. A little more is know about the CJ2A’s used by the Swiss Army. Pictures I have seen and what I have read reveal that many MB parts were used to produce these 2A’s. Now before you think you found a military CJ2A, read again where these 2A’s went. It is going to be very slim to none that there are any in the US. Remember, there is no know documentation or reason that our military ever used the CJ2A. There were still plenty of MB’s and GPW’s in inventory. I have seen one of the Swiss military CJ2A listed for sale in Supply Line, but it was in Ireland!!

it is possible to make it into a military replica but it will get spendy $$$.   I am also assured military tubs are not drop on items on CJ2A frames

money is does not create happiness - but it does help buy it...  If I had the garage space, I would search your username, figure out where you live, and buy it out from under you

I don't have the garage space - yet.

My dad had 3 at one time.  The goal was to cannibalize 1 for parts to keep the other 2 running.  He hoped the redundancy would insure one good to go at any time - that turned out to be the exception.

Isn't there some guy selling these in a crate for $500 minus the wheels and tires?

My dad had a '46 Willys for several years when I was a kid.  I loved that thing and have always wanted to have my own.
Good luck on your on your restoration OP.  Can't wait see pictures of your restored jeep.

I just so happen to have the powertrain. That is really cool.

I'm just staring at this Jeep and googling everything CJ2A while not making any progress in getting the garage situated for this project. I am so fascinated right now.

Jeeps that old are cool from a history standpoint, but they belong in a museum. I wouldn't buy something I'm not gonna wheel.

Or better yet you could buy it and turn it into a wheeler just to make the history buffs cringe.

Buy it, restore it, wheel it, break it, rinse and repeat.

Built, not bought. Not a chance in hell this will only be a show car.

Here is my favorite mud hole, 'The Bog', to watch other people get stuck in.

I am about to go snap some more photos of the frame and some of the drive components.

Lots of pics and explanation after a few days of inspection and research.  Pictures may not be in the order they were taken.  I will also be updating the OP as this thread continues with hot links to each technical post.

A quick 360 view.

Being nearly 70 years old, this Jeep has a bit of a rust problem. Initial inspection of the exterior of the tub shows a rust hole on both sides of the tub under the doors near the drain holes. Both fender flares also have a good bit of rust. The fenders, grille, and the rest of the exterior are in relatively good shape.

Let's take a look at the inside of the tub now.

Looking closely at the low angle of the photography of the tailgate/rear seat area that there is a noticeable warp in the steel. Underneath what you see here is a frame support that goes across the chassis and strengthens the thinner metal in the tailgate area. A significant portion of the inside of this tub will need a lot of work.

Since we are talking about the frame how about taking a peek under her skirt?

Front passenger side wheel area, pay attention to the frame.

Front drivers side.

Drivers side.

Drivers side rear.

Me no thinks this tool box hold much.

Front differential and company.

Now that we have a good look at the frame I have determined that it is truly in great shape and will take very little work to clean her up and protect her.

This is the transmission and transfer case. I don't think I snapped any good before photos but, if it isn't blatantly obvious already, you can see which side I spent cleaning. For the curious minds, I used PB Blaster, straight AWESOME!, a handful of rags in a box and a firm toothbrush.

The motor oil is new and clean. Maybe the old man changed it before he parked it, which would be awesome. I am unsure of the condition of the transmission and transfer case fluid, I will be finding out when my rebuild kit comes in. Regardless, I'm not cracking that case until it is nice and clean.

The motor is going to get pulled sometime in the next week or two. I need to figure out how to safely suspend this tub a few feet above the frame before I worry about where I'll put this motor. I also have a D16Y7 engine I was going to build, turbo and sell first to help fund this project. I sure ain't returning my motor to the junkyard for a $50 core charge when its worth a few hundred in parts. Anyway, I'd rather brush up on my rebuild skills on the cheap Honda motor right before I jump into this gem.

I need another pair of jack stands so I can get these wheels off and the frame supported. I might be trying to find an affordable lift that will fit in my garage since I seem to be doing this stuff all the time. It's either that or a redneck engineered solution to get this tub out of my way.
