I know well enough to keep a can of starting fluid in the door panel at all times When my son graduated from Auburn, he "borrowed" (as in, he took it without asking anyone) the school's 6.0 flatbed and race car trailer to bring all of his shit home. When I asked him about getting in trouble, he replied "What are they gonna do, revoke my diploma?" When he rolled into town, he stopper at the local Mapco to fill it up. Without thinking he shut it off, and I ended up having to call a buddy who owns a local wrecker service to drag it to my shop. The next morning it fired up just fine, so he drove it home and unloaded some stuff, then headed back to the shop where again, he had a brain fart and shut it off. Ended up being the next morning before he could leave because of the damn O-rings in the heads. But did you rebuild it? Hell no, he took that POS back to school and actually left it in the parking lot of the shop that did their maintenance. He told his professor that it needed the high pressure oil pump O-rings replaced again. 2004 or 2005? That said, my '07 needs them I don't recall the specifics, but the shop next door to mine is a diesel shop and we walked over to talk to him about it. He actually had a 6.0 in his shop with the cab off and was able to show me exactly what the problem was. There's a sensor on the passenger side head that looks for oil pressure during cranking before it'll let it light off. When cold, it'll just barely build enough pressure to let it go, but when it's warm, it won't build enough pressure and it'll never light off. I'm sure you know exactly what I'm talking about, but I'm a diesel idiot. I play with gasoline and spark plugs for a living. Yeah, Navistar engines (even the big ones in International trucks) won't even cycle the injectors until the FICM (I guess ECM in the big ones) sees somewhere around 500-600rpm Its one of the reason my 6.0 has a 6.7 starter on it. The 6.0 starter is your standard direct-drive starter. The 6.7 is a gear-reduction starter and will spin the absolute fuck out of the engine Fun fact, the 6.0 Powerstroke is basically the same engine as the Navistar VT365 that was put in medium duty trucks and buses Yeah, the Navistar plant which built these engines was right here in Huntsville. They were damn near bulletproof engines (from what I understand) until the federal government stuck their nose into it and put unnecessary restrictions on them. Navistar is like CAT. They make FANTASTIC diesel engines, they're just terrible at making emissions-compliant diesel engines Fuck a buncha emissions BS. You with me? At this point I think I've owned more vehicles that were technically federally illegal than ones that would actually pass an emissions inspection One weekend me and several friends who owned 5.0 Foxbody Mustangs rode down to Birmingham to do some street racing. This would have been about 1994 or 1995, so back when the cars werestill fairly new. One of my buddies got pulled over by the B'ham police and the first thing the cop asked was "Son, if I look underneath this car, am I gonna see catalytic converters?" My buddy replied "Well sir, that depends." Cop says "Depends on what?" Buddy says "It depends on whether or not you know what a catalytic converter looks like." Cop says "I absolutely do." Buddy says "Well then, you ain't gonna see them." Read this to the Mrs. She rost hard. Street racing in Birmingham used to be pretty fun, but then the dope dealers and other demographics who shall not be mentioned got involved, and things got sketchy. I tried to find the video but couldn't recall the keywords, but the last street race I attended down there was on a Sunday afternoon when Evander Hollyfield's kinda-half brother had a local dude driving his car, and the car got loose and ended up hitting a light pole and killing a bystander, after which everyone got the hell out of Dodge. By then it was super sketchy, and I'm too damn old and white to be dealing with that shit. Laughs in 405. IYKYK. Yeah, I understand. It was some serious no-time drag cars which probably (OK, positively) had no business on the street. I'm talking cars that would run low 5's in the eighth mile, which is stupid quick. Not to mention that none of them had any kind of safety equipment, plus most didn't even have roll bars. It was some super sketchy shit, but it damn sure was fun to watch. |
