She was elected to Seattle city council as a socialist. One of her first official acts was a publicity stunt where she told Boeing employees they should "seize the means of production". She's gotten progressively crazier since. I know you're saying to yourself, "she's just a councilwoman on a single city council, how can she affect anything outside her borders" Turns out Seattle wields disproportionate power in the region, and the state. Sawant's head tax on Amazon, along with the council's broad adversarial attitude toward business, helped drive Amazon to look for a new headquarters. Last night a Bellevue city councilman announced Amazon is drastically increasing its footprint in his city. They didn't need to move to NYC, they just needed to drive across the 520 bridge. It's a win-win. The housing market will maintain its momentum, and the HQ will not land in another unsuspecting town where it would bring along the kind of progressive policies that are killing Seattle and the state. |
