About 10 years ago I left my private medical practice as a psychiatrist and went into IT. At the time, I was about 2-3 years into the resurgence of my faith. I’d spent the majority of my childhood as an agnostic, and my early formative years as as an athiest. The diocesan priest of my parish who I had gotten to know well in that time approached me one day and asked if I’d be willing to meet with an individual claiming to be possessed. I chuckled, much to the chagrin of the priest, but ultimately accepted the offer. I half expected I’d be ask to pull up to an old creepy home, where the person would be tied to a bed, speaking Latin in a deep voice, but reality was much more boring than that. I’d been setup in an office at the church, with a camera rolling to collect evidence. The interview lasted about an hour. It was an older women, in her 50s, who would go in and out of “possession.” Shortly after concluding the interview, I met with the priest and informed him that this was no a case of demonic possession, but a women suffering from split personalities or schizophrenia. Just like that, my first case was in the books. Over the years, I’ve met with 74 individuals, at church or their homes, across state lines, all claiming to be demonically possessed. All with a mental explanation. Until a few weeks ago. To say I’m a skeptic, would be putting it lightly. While I maintain my faith to this day, I do not believe that people are actively being possessed. Well, I did… The call came in while I was helping an old friend swap out a firewall for his father in law who owns a construction company. I asked my friend to give me a moment and I left the room to answer the call. I was given the details of the case, a young woman, claiming to be demonically possessed, ability to move objects, know things she could possibly not know, and speak Latin. Basically… your common everyday case of possession for anyone who has seen the exorcist. I asked for the address and was taken aback when the priest said I’d be taking a flight to a small town in Iowa. I’d been out of state before, but not cross country. I paused for a moment, not wanting to take multiple days off work, but ultimately relented. A few days later, I was picked up in Iowa by another priest and we chatted about the case on the drive down. I had let him know about my record, 74 cases, 74 explanations. He looked over at me and casually quipped “not this time.” By the time we arrived at the home the sun was beginning to set and I helped the priest carry in some equipment. Microphone, multiple go pro cameras, tape recorder, the works. I figured this priest took his interviews seriously. Upon entering, I met with the mother, who was an overweight women, completely unappealing, smoking a cigarette. Her foot bouncing up and down as we talked. A younger boy at a table playing video games on an iPad. I then heard banging from upstairs. The women’s eyes looked up, then back down at me, “she’s ready for you” she said with a crooked smile. The priest and I made our way upstairs, I was a bit nervous at this point. Were we dealing with a violent mental patient? Had she snuck a knife into her room? I didn’t feel like getting stabbed tonight. The Priest placed his hand on my shoulder, “focus” he said. “You can talk to it, but don’t believe anything it says.” “Talk to it?” “The girl you mean?” The priest shook his head and asked I wait outside while he setup the equipment. I glanced inside and could make out a persons foot on the bed just before the door closed. Then the yelling started. Deep guttural insults that didn’t seem to end. Finally, the Priest emerged and closed the door. He placed the microphone on me and again said “don’t listen to it, it lies.” “Let’s get this over with” I said with a sigh. The door opened, and there… tied to the damn bed was the girl. I immediately looked at the priest and told him we needed to remove the bindings. “The bindings stay” he said sharply and loudly Uneasy, I made my way to a chair and sat down. I spoke the date, time, location, my name, and the name of the girl. She had remained quiet. I began with my usual opening line. “So, I understand you are possessed” The girl looked up, eyes wide, “no, no, please help me, they have me locked up here!” My face was uneasy and her panic suddenly turned into a deep guttural laugh. I composed myself and continued. “If you are a demon, prove it” Suddenly, a shelf on her dresser shook. “A real demon would open it” The girl simply looked at me. I began to jot down on my notepad when she spoke again. “You don’t believe” she said. Her voice sounding more like a girls voice. “Correct, I do not believe you are demonically possessed” I responded. Her eyes scrunched up and her lips became pursed. I was about to have my “Demi why you do this to me” moment. She began to speak to me in French. I will provide a rough English translation. “Do you remember when you bought me that glass slipper in 4th grade?” I jumped back out of my chair. The priest began to shout at me “remember, it lies!” “I’m here in the dark, help me, why won’t you help your mamma who sat next to you in the hospital when you fell and hit your head falling off that ladder?” At this point, I began to cry. “Mamma, I’m so sorry mama” The girl began to laugh. It was a deep laugh I can hardly explain. The priest grabbed me and pulled me out of the room. I tried to compose myself outside the bedroom. I felt out of breath. My heart was pounding. This is it, I’m going to die. The priest grabbed my arm and ushered me outside. “Breathe” “Breathe” And that folks, is the story of my first real encounter with Demonic possession and my first panic attack. In the days that passed, I have felt a great sense of sadness, but also a great sense of awe. I know now I wasn’t speaking to my mom, but the truth behind the words has left me shook. I cannot explain it. Every word of it true and unknown to anyone me and my family. I asked the priest if my name was given to the family before I arrived. Only my first name. Being paranoid, I asked all my family members if they had received a call, asking about me. Which of course, they did not. I hope I see 200 or even 300 patients who “believe” they are demonically possessed before I ever experience that again. |

I'm beginning to believe that perhaps demons manifest themselves as mental illness in people, twisting their minds and causing them to do terrible things. God created our consciousness, the genetic code that makes us who we are and develops our brain; perhaps some mental illness is like the demons fingerprint or corruption of God's creation a warping of the genetic code. It would make sense if I were a demon and wanted to thumb my nose at God that I would take what is supposed to be a testimony to the glory of God, our bodies and corrupt them. |

Evil absolutely exists; therefore, God absolutely exists. Simple really. I have a close family member in that realm and they say it’s mental but it’s evil so I think it’s more demonic. |

What purpose were you there for, to "exercise" the demonic? Why didn't you cast it out of her? <<< You haven't in reality knowingly experienced devil influenced or oppressed persons or even those likely possessed (extremely rare). Psychiatrist or not, you are clearly ignorant. Your story sounds/ reads like fiction. In fact you are not a true believer, are you? Also, your story is a great example of how the Catholic church is a 'false authority' on these matters of faith. I take it, you like to entertain darkness or just want attention. It's something to do with how these evil spirits have "certain powers and abilities, but not others." IOW, they are to a certain extent bound by the same natural laws humans are - just not ALL of them. Well something like that anyway. |
