[ARCHIVED THREAD] - How Insurgents Live In Hiding (written by an Spetsnaz operator hunting them, with pics) (Page 3 of 4)

Wut? Calling these people "jihadists" is a Western thing. Russians consider them criminals, the official term is "illegal armed bandit groups" (and yes, it's hilarious, because it implies that there is such a thing as legal armed bandit groups). If you notice, in OP the guy tends to call the opposition "bandits", which you won't commonly see in Western coverage. That said, yeah, liberal use of ill-fitting labels is a problem that plagues modern media on all sides. Try to objectively define "terrorist" sometime, it's an interesting exercise. Quoted:

Yeah, I know that. I didn't join a month after Russia rolled into Ukraine. *Eyeroll* You do realize the "tatzhit" nickname is there because if some of the journalists / aid workers I talk to ARE in Ukraine, and would be thrown in jail/tortured if compromised? Seriously, it's not rocket science to figure out why a guy reporting on civil wars has a new-ish online identity. I don't bother much with PERSEC anymore, since the things simmered down a bit, and the danger was always rather small, but better safe than sorry. People in UA get thrown in jail for facebook posts pretty regularly, by both sides. I had an old account somewhere here, but it was years ago, and I long forgot the email and password. I think one of the mods questioned me about it in a recent thread. Now, back to discussing jihadists... I love the Russians criminal labels they have for every enemy. I bet there are a bunch of people accidently calling an FSA insurgent a fascist during a big meeting and every stops talking, uncomfortable silence, before someone coughs and says "jihadist." Wut? Try to objectively define "terrorist" sometime, it's an interesting exercise. 87% truth, in order to insert more propaganda. Russians have been calling every criminal or bandit or even outspoken schoolteacher from the Muslim regions of the Northern Caucausus "Wahabbi" for decades. You, in turn, are deliberately framing this using terms that will resonate with Americans, and build on the meta-narrative that both countries are fighting the same struggle, convincing more Americans on the right of center to view Russia as an ideological partner and misunderstood natural ally. And Holy Shit, just came back from the other thread... "Republican vs. Nationalist?" I'm going to start calling every anti Russian group in the Northern Caucasus a "Republican" now. Fuckin' l o l |

And I think the Armiya Krayova (capitalist Polish insurgents) weren't called fascists in WWII; the rest were called "fascists" or crap like "Nazi lapdogs" because, well, they were.
As for ISIS thing, I think it's actually Syrian bias, not Russian per se. Any coverage I see from Syria keeps calling the insurgents "ISIS", mostly because the Syrians seem unwilling to discriminate between different kinds of jihadi idiot. And don't get me started on Ukraine... Yeah, Ukrainian nationalists aren't Nazis, but they're as close as you can get in 21st century. I mean, they actually have Blut-And-Boden and Wolfsangel flags, and proclaim racial superiority. That said, yeah, all sides over-simplify and mis-label enemies in service of their propaganda. And I'm not debating that Russian coverage of geopolitics is as bad as mainstream Western narrative. But to say that Russians are somehow unique in misrepresenting the situation is very far-fetched. Russians misrepresent Al-Qaeda offshoots as "ISIS", Western MSM misrepresent them as "moderates". |

I think it YOU falling into the ages-old trap of "there are some good islamic terrorists that we should view kindly" that US has repeatedly failed to avoid in Afganistan, Bosnia, Chechnya, Libya, Syria etc. |

Russians misrepresent Al-Qaeda offshoots as "ISIS", Western MSM misrepresent them as "moderates". The idea that Ukraine became a bastion of far right nationalism overnight is so beyond preposterous that I can understand why folks like you are so persistent with getting that message worked into forum after forum, posting after posting. The Russian narrative is unsustainable, and countered by far too many independent sources and pre-"coup" press reports that are all over the internet for those who bother to think for themselves. So, you have to find those who don't. I can see why GD is so appealing. Meanwhile, the efforts continue within Ukraine, as broken and ineffective as it can be and usually is, to fix itself while simultaneously engaging in a war effort all but forgotten by the West which ironically is the result of Ukrainians daring to want to cooperate more with the West. While this does provide fertile breeding grounds for nationalist rhetoric and recruitment, it takes a special amount of effort by Russian propaganda to magnify it to the degree you have. The fight remains one of the whole of Ukrainian society, left to right, rich to poor, fighting a persistent, cynical enemy ideologically and physically based across the border in Russia. Unlike in Crimea, this means by which free societies gage public interest and intent, elections, occur with professional international observation, and the reports - as often critical as they are - are freely available for anyone to read. http://www.osce.org/odihr/elections/ukraine Ukraine has not been taken over by fascists. Even the fascist-sympathetic groups like Right Sector have had to emphasis and "de-Nazify" their message as they provides their "volunteer" forces to the fighting, because it was obvious how wholly unpopular some of the implications of their movement were to many Ukrainians. But, the simple fact remains that while international observers continue to have free rein throughout free Ukraine, reporting often unfavorable things that the Russian press runs with in glee, the "republican" reality remains opaque, strictly controlled and manipulated, and Russia itself has spent the past two years playing ridiculous games over letting anyone do any serious monitoring of their side of the border. These are not the actions of people with nothing to hide. These ate the actions of people whose cynical views of human nature and politics makes them wholly unable to even comprehend the nature of a free society. |

Your intended audience is the casual observer, the I get all me news from GD" types who have a natural cynicism of everything coming from Washington, albeit with a right wing versus left wing bias. It's fertile territory, I admit, and it must remind you a bit of home. Whoa, hold your horses. First off, I was clearly talking about WWII, and you suddenly accuse me of over-simplifying modern wars in Caucasus and Ukraine? Second, it's damn near impossible to be aware of all the factions in Ukraine and their motivations, much less do this for multiple conflicts. Off the top of my head, semi-independent "big" actors in summer 2014 included Strelkov, Oplot, Vostok, Bolotov, Mozgovoi, Dremov, Kozitsyn, Russian Orthodox Army, GBR Betmen, UAF, State Security, Aidar, Azov, Shakhtersk battalion, Donbass battalion... I could go on. And these are just the big guys - moderate-sized towns like Gorlovka or Lisichansk each had 3+ local militia groups, which also acted semi-independently. Third, I purposefully and repeatedly avoid talking about these things, also because the regular "GD types" don't have the time to fact-check what I'm saying, so they'll either disbelieve me because my narrative doesn't match CNN picture, or they're idiots for blindly believing a strange man on a forum. As for ISIS thing, I think it's actually Syrian bias, not Russian per se. Any coverage I see from Syria keeps calling the insurgents "ISIS", mostly because the Syrians seem unwilling to discriminate between different kinds of jihadi idiot. Again, not gonna talk about it, mostly because I have no time to write walls of text trying to convince someone who thinks "entire Ukrainian society" is pro-coup. Who voted the previous president into power then, gremlins? You've probably seen me post links, read them if you're so inclined. Maybe, when I have entirely too much time on my hands, I'll make a Ukraine thread, but it's like trying to explain Indian Wars to Russians. |

However, I believe Putin's figure got inflated beyond all measure, because his friends like to sing praises to Glorious Leader, and his enemies like to paint an Evil Genius to keep their populations scared and obedient. In reality, he's just a man in a golden cage, not that different from Gaddafi or Yanukovich - just a bigger country, maybe a more competent man, but ultimately a fairly standard autocrat stuck with a shitty elite and a problematic country. |

Two thoughts, and thanks for this.
First, the successful gurilla is like a fish swimming in an ocean of peasants...or whatever Mao or whomever said. You have to hide among the population, not go off on a camping trip. Hit and hide, not hit and run. Second, if your cause is just, the police and military will be cooperative at some level. These insurgents are the bad guys, and people see it, hence they cand follow number one, above. In the upcoming American civil war, the other side is welfare Cheetos and the police against us taxpayers and neighbor's of the police. Think the police will be effective in working against us? It may take a few incidents and months, but we will be the civilized majority fighting the insurgents, not the insurgents. Appologies for Apple's autocorrect. |

I'm talking about how every enemy in WWII was called a fascist, or how the Ukraine are Nazis, how they call every enemy of Assad ISIS. We do it too, generalize, but I have so little respect for the Russian govt that I find it hypocritical and funny how they go out of the way to negatively label every enemy they face as some sort of criminal or deviant. Why? That's how every government, every society, every special interest group, every guerilla group, every ingroup does it. You target your opposition as being contemptible. Being uncivilized. Being different. Being subhuman. It's what the Islamists do to the kafir. It's what Stalin did to anyone not to his liking. It's what the FBI did to the Branch Davidians. It's what catholics did to the Protestants. It's what the Turks did to the Armenians. The Germans to the Jews. The Hutus to the Tutsis. Progressives to Conservatives. The GOPe and DNC to the Tea Party. Angry Lesbians against the 'Patriarchy'. It's SOP in the fight for hearts and minds. You have to define the enemy and justify the violence. |

However, people in USSR thought so too... First, thank you for the thread. Interesting pictures. However, going rogue doesn't necessarily mean a long-term camping trip. I was talking to a Vietnam Veteran the other day and jokingly asked him if he'd seen any VC. "See them? Hell, I worked with them!" He meant, of course, that the many of the VC lived among the population and were indistinguishable from them. They had their day job, and at night they would attack Americans, assassinate the South Vietnamese civilian/military leadership, etc. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

I said "at least". It may be twenty, hundred, may be more. I have an interest in civil wars, and one thing it taught me is that sh*t can go downhill real quick, and it's rather unpredictable. I'd estimate the chance of a civil war within the next 10 years at 15%, within the next 20 at 30%. But then, I'm just pulling numbers out of my *ss, and also I'm biased due to reading about various civil wars so much. Just as examples: Population voted by an overwhelming margin to PRESERVE the USSR. Sh*t still went downhill. Libya was the best country in Africa, bar none - far higher standard of living. Sh*t still went downhill. In Ukraine, anyone with half a brain could see that a victory by "Eurointegrators" is gonna ruin the country, for basic economic reasons. Sh*t still went downhill. I suppose you could blame US State Dept for some of the above, but there are just as many cases where outside influences weren't that strong, and country still collapsed. Plus it's not like there is any shortage of outside forces that dislike the US. Quoted:

Ukraine conflict is pretty fucking far from a civil war, If it weren't for Russian mercs, GRU agents, Chechians MVD troops and volunteers, there would not have been a war in the first place. I lived there from 08-12. Straight Russian involvement and a bad choice of puppets caused it. The propaganda on this event from Russia is really bad. Russian GRU sleepers were the first to fire shots in this war. They rose from their supply caches under Russian owned orthodox churches in the Donbass and seized government buildings. |

INTRO The blogger molonlabe is some sort of a counter-terrorist operator in Russian Caucasus (Ingushetia region, most likely). Below, he talks about what life as an insurgent is like. I thought this may be interesting to translate - not just to share his stories, but mostly to show the hell that insurgent's/partisans life is in general. I would assume it stayed pretty similar in every place and age - from King Alfred of Wessex hiding from Saxons in a swamp, to American colonists and Viet Cong; details may change, but it's always highly unappealing. BACKGROUND One thing you need to understand about the war in Caucasus is that: 1. On one hand, the Chechens and other islamists have been largely defeated, and the locals already got to see what their Caliphate looks like - they want none of it (Chechnya under Islamist rule was ISIS-lite, slave markets and all, but with even more lawlessness). 2. On the other hand, there are always a few idiots that are slow on the uptake, or have freshly arrived from a Hajj to Mecca, where they were "re-educated" by Saudis. So there are no longer large, well-organized gangs, but low-intensity anti-terrorist campaign is endemic to the region. Maybe it can be compared to the IRA in some ways. ======= Story 1: "STRAGGLERS" Molonlabe: Being an insurgent has its negative sides. One of them is that you can not count on your buddies not abandoning you in battle. This is not because the bandits are all vile and immoral (although that, too). It's simply because the firefights are usually sudden, and trying to save a buddy in trouble is usually impossible. The choice is simple - to run, or die along with him. We have no such choice - the option to leave our own in battle is not considered even in theory. But the bandits have a different mentality and different priorities. Their talk about "dreaming of martyrdom" is mostly propaganda. The bandits will never stand and fight, if they have the option of running away. But oftentimes this salvation is actually a protracted death. Say, the whole gang destroyed, and one escaped. Or he went to get food, came back and the base was already destroyed by evil infidels. Or you were abandoned in battle, but managed to get away. The gang immediately faded into the woods, and you are left alone. So, what is next? Bandits are put in conditions where they have to withhold vital information even from each other: who is the accomplice providing the gang with food, where are the caches, spare shelters, how to communicate with other gangs and so on. And the survivors, stuck by themselves, are left with nothing. If one is very lucky and knows where is a cache with food - he survives for some time. But it still is constant living on the brink. Sprained your foot? You will die. Caught a bad cold? You will die. Come out of the the woods? You will be shot. In a firefight, such stragglers put up little resistance. Trying to run away also ends in failure - they are too weakened. They are often found with body sores and boils. In practice, they resemble armed hobos. Here are the contents of the backpack of one such straggler. Toothpaste is there, but the lid is stuck - has not been opened in a while. Just two pills of Nurofen... http://ic.pics.livejournal.com/molonlabe/52422581/218547/218547_original.jpg The machinegun has not been cleaned in God knows how long ... http://ic.pics.livejournal.com/molonlabe/52422581/218624/218624_original.jpg His kitchen. He would stir a spoonful of flour with a little water, and bake it over a small fire into a tiny piece of bread, which he would eat with ketchup: http://ic.pics.livejournal.com/molonlabe/52422581/218972/218972_original.jpg Empty mags, and one full one... http://ic.pics.livejournal.com/molonlabe/52422581/219485/219485_original.jpg Some loose ammo in the backpack... http://ic.pics.livejournal.com/molonlabe/52422581/219729/219729_original.jpg The battery in the phone was dead. Very little food. The bandit was haggard and emaciated. He just tried to hide in the bushes, hoping we won't find him. No such luck. Scouts sometimes find those who died by themselves. Just sat down, leaned against a tree and died. Obviously, that's an unpleasant sight, because the remains are usually found some time later, and in summer the bodies decompose rapidly. One straggler was found by the locals in their basement - he had a fever and began to rave, and this gave himself out. He did not make it. What's the point of running from a fight and condemning yourself to a lonely and hungry wandering through the woods? Well, everyone is the maker of their own little hell. ======= [second translation to follow right below] Quoted to view pics. |

Story 2: A TERRORIST'S LIFE Molonlabe: As promised, I'll tell you about how terrorists live in the wild. If you have been on a serious hike, you know that staying clean the whole time is a problem. Sooner or later, habits recede, and you are eating food with unwashed hands, tolerate grimy dishes, and in general, are not a picture of cleanliness. For those that have to permanently live in the forest, far from civilization, especially since they need to constantly hide and sneak, hygiene inevitably takes third place to the needs of constant struggle against hunger and cold. There are limits, of course. Those who go too far in their disgusting habits, are forcibly brought back up to minimum standards by other bandits. Because, although it is possible to tolerate the stench - lice, bedbugs and decaying body parts can be a hazard to others, physically and morally. There were even cases of executions of far-gone militants. Because they can't let those go in peace, and can not bring them back to human form. Nothing else to do. Living autonomously is hard. Bandits try to create some kind of minimum living conditions, but those hiding like rats will inevitably have a rat's life. Well, no one said being a terrorist would be easy - from the very beginning, newcomers are warned about the hardships and privations of "jihad". However, in practice it turns out to be much worse than described. Sooner or later, "warriors of God" cease to view life as something valuable - because the value of living such a lifestyle is, objectively, near zero. Yes, no one wants to die, and survival instinct still works. I personally haven't seen cases where a "Mujahid rushed a crowd of enemies, sowing panic among them his courage", as their propagandists like to say. As a rule, the main goal of the bandits in a firefight is to run away from it as quickly as possible. And, unlike [us], abandoning their own in battle is not considered reprehensible among them. Insurgents only live in dugouts and bunkers during the winter. Other seasons, it is impossible to stay in them, because you need to burn a fire the whole time, to ward off dampness. If this isn't done, a wet dugout will drive them to the grave faster than the "evil infidels." Very rarely do they manage to build a comfortable dugout. I only saw a couple of holes where you could walk straight, and which have been more or less insulated for staying warm in winter. Here is one, for example: http://ic.pics.livejournal.com/hardingush/52422581/49172/49172_original.jpg Usually, dugout is only big enough to move on all fours. Nothing fancy - staying alive is already great. The stench in these holes is unbearable, and soaks into everything. Nothing to be done - nowhere to shower in winter... http://ic.pics.livejournal.com/hardingush/52422581/49500/49500_original.jpg In the summer, bandits live in tents or just sleep under the open sky. This is due to the fact that the bases have to be saved for the winter. Loss of a base, which was built at such an expense, is a real tragedy for them. Especially in winter, when building even a temporary hut is very difficult. Cry, terrorists - "evil infidels and apostates" found and burned your "home sweet home": http://ic.pics.livejournal.com/hardingush/52422581/50431/50431_original.jpg How do you live now? Where to go? What to do? All the food and loot is gone! http://ic.pics.livejournal.com/hardingush/52422581/50683/50683_original.jpg In short, losing a base is a real reason to be sad... Therefore, the bases are necessarily left empty in the spring, summer and autumn, and insurgents wander through the mountains, stopping at random places for the night. Sometimes it looks relatively civilized - camped similar to tourists: http://ic.pics.livejournal.com/hardingush/52422581/49841/49841_original.jpg But mostly - like dogs. Falling on rugs and sleeping: http://ic.pics.livejournal.com/hardingush/52422581/49955/49955_original.jpg Here, a question of building campfires comes up. Yes, they need to hide and so on. But how much food can one make on a burner, for example? And how long can you exist on dry bread and cookies? So they to take risks and start campfires. http://ic.pics.livejournal.com/hardingush/52422581/50929/50929_original.jpg Sometimes they even make an improvised oven. Bake bread (no shops in the forest). Pants are dried above it, so that the heat is not wasted. http://ic.pics.livejournal.com/hardingush/52422581/51911/51911_original.jpg A fire is needed not only to dry off and get warm, but also to prepare any kind of hot soup: http://ic.pics.livejournal.com/hardingush/52422581/50973/50973_original.jpg But sometimes there is nothing cook, at all. Say, the accomplice who brought them food gets arrested - that's it, facing starvation. They have to go back to hunter-gatherer mode - berries, mushrooms, fishing and hunting. This guy caught fish for soup: http://ic.pics.livejournal.com/hardingush/52422581/51393/51393_original.jpg And if they managed to shoot a deer, or steal a lamb - then it is a holiday. The remaining meat needs to be cured, or it'll rot. http://ic.pics.livejournal.com/hardingush/52422581/51476/51476_original.jpg One time, they got hit by an attack helo when drying meat. We did not know, and when we arrived, found on the branches plastered with pieces of raw meat. At first we thought those were the bandits after direct hit. Barf By the way, about hygiene again - that's how they cook their meals: http://ic.pics.livejournal.com/hardingush/52422581/51979/51979_original.jpg The bottle isn't that big a deal - look at the sides of a cooking pot: http://ic.pics.livejournal.com/hardingush/52422581/52408/52408_original.jpg And see the "clean" hands of the cooks? http://ic.pics.livejournal.com/hardingush/52422581/52567/52567_original.jpg But at least those guys will have hot soup. Most will have to eat their food on the run, whatever they got: http://ic.pics.livejournal.com/hardingush/52422581/52984/52984_original.jpg Actually, this lifestyle is what prevents many potential militants from going into the forest. Those that leave are usually already involved, and flee to the country when they realize they're about to get nabbed. At this point, their choices are limited - prison, or a dugout. The califans understand all these problems. Once, they even decided to shoot a "commercial" of how they feast. Like, "we want for nothing, and live like kings". Alas, the idea has ended in failure. After a few days, both the camera operators and the actors saw the end of their worthless existence. Oh well, at least they didn't die starving. ======= PS. From tatzhit: 1. I assume he got the pics from cell phones of dead/captured insurgents 2. Here's another recent translation that GD liked, if someone missed it: Equipment of a modern militiaman fighting in UA civil war - with pics and description Again, quoted for pics. |

(Sorry to default to Ukraine/East Europe for examples again, it's just because that is something I know very well and can describe easily): "Easterners" in Ukraine put up with enormous amount of BS. They put up with Russian being considered a foreign language, despite 83% of population speaking Russian as primary (*2012 Gallup data). They put up with Nazi collaborators being glorified as "true Ukrainian heroes", despite the fact that ~20x more Ukrainians fought against the Nazis in the Red Army, and the fact that Bandera's followers were heavily involved in genocide. They even put up with the first Maidan coup in 2005 (similar to Bush-Gore election, only in Ukraine, the "Westerners" actually staged mass riots in the capital and forced the government to change the election result). Then, the "Westerners" tried to boil the frog too quickly, overthrew the government, and went to take over Eastern areas by force. Boom, civil war time. And this is despite the fact "Easterners" were essentially unorganized (basically, the "pro-Russian" president didn't want any competition and persecuted Eastern nationalist organizations rather heavily). Essentially, the same "depends on how quickly you boil the frog" deal happened in a lot of post-Soviet countries. Especially Georgia and Moldova are very characteristic here, because civil war was avoided in some districts (Adjaria, Gagauzia), but not in others (Abkhazia/Ossetia, Transnistria), depending on how stupidly did the nationalists act towards each specific region. So, I would say that the following hypothetical scenario is most likely for the US: 1. The liberal FSA overthrows the government and/or starts a civil war (revolutions are always started by the FSA - could be some sort of "make America great again/white power" crowd too, but as you said that seems real unlikely). 2. Right-wingers are naturally pulled onto the other side 3. The place turns into Kosovo Quoted:

There's definitely a certain irony in how Russian leaders and their useful idiots or agent provocateurs here accuse Americans of being stuck in Cold War thinking. Russians seem unable to comprehend a world in which their security isn't maintained by bullying neighbors and running roughshod over their own citizenry. Of course, that kind of thinking predates the Cold War. |
