I don't know why they call it Universal Basic Income when it's not unversal, or enough money to provide a basic income. I think the whole thing is a terrible idea anyway, but what they're doing is pointless in the extreme. They just want to say they did something for a headline. |

It was to see if the extra above and beyond the amount the state gives to every unemployed and disabled person would assist them in getting back to work. It was money with no restrictions. F it. I am for labor force bureau. Cannot find a job in a year?, well you get to work for the county or state projects office. You’re not sitting on your ass doing heroin. Nice tasks to be performed; lawn mowing parks, picking up roadside litter, shoveling public side walks. Oh and you’re not eligible for workers comp. you will mop floors at the county court house or the old folks home. You will not get welfare money for an apartment to sit on your ass and play your play station games. This free ride shit is a joke. |

I am sure I am preaching to the choir but...
3 reasons UBI doesn't work #1 Scumbag: many are in need of UBI because of the poor choices they make unrelated to how much money they have, only thing that can drive them to slightly better choices is the pain of no money. (I have to not call in sick to work because I need the money or I'll get evicted) #2 Inflation: give UBI to everyone and the price of all things will go up, roughly wiping out the gains even for those who would use it relatively wisely. #3 Habit: Sometimes a person is pushed to spend unwisely due to financial constraints. Do that for a long time and it becomes ingrained habit. For me, when I was very financially strapped, it was much easier to eat cheaply if I ate unhealthy. Now that I can afford to eat healthier, it's really hard to break those bad habits. |

I fully support a Universal Basic Income here in the US, with a few conditions: 1) To get the UBI, you must be sterilized. Men get a vasectomy, women get their tubes tied. No more kids if you want the free money. 2) All other welfare is ended. Period. No more food stamps, no more housing assistance, free healthcare, nothing. If you spend your "paycheck" and can't afford food, you go hungry. You waste it on drugs and booze, and can't make rent? Enjoy sleeping on the street. Didn't budget for medical insurance? Good luck with that obesity-related disease. I believe the cut cost of all the admin and benefits for all these old programs would more than make up for the cost of UBI. There's a few other issues, like actually stopping illegal immigration, and letting junkies die from their repeated ODs, but I doubt any liberals would actually be willing to support UBI without all the existing welfare programs continuing unchanged. |
