My dad had 8mm (I think) footage of Santa arriving at George AFB in an F-4 when I was a baby. Growing up near Selfridge ANG base, I saw F-4s all the time. We used to play Vietnam when I was a kid and when the F-4s flew by we'd pretend they were coming to bomb the VC for us.

vmax84 Yeah, I left RS in 1986 - my dad (pilot flying the photog around in his F4 in both sets of photos posted above) was heading up a transition team for the conversion and decided he would rather do one more assignment in F4s than transition to F16s that close to retirement. Damn, small world........I was at Ramstein from the very end of 1983 to mid 1986, and then finished up my 4 years at Pope AFB.......cried every day at Pope, missing Germany!!! Loved Germany. vmax84 |
| I was an F4E flight simulator technician in the Air Force, stationed at Homestead AFB, FL. A few times a pilot was a no show so the instructor asked me to fly the sim for back seater training missions. That was a blast, the closest I'll ever get to flying the real thing. |

Spangdahlem bird there - my dad has that pic as his desktop. When he was stationed there, we lived between Spangdahlem and Bitburg so we had both F4s and F15s overhead everyday. |

| I was a Second Class Gunners Mate going to Underwater swim school in Key West, Fl during the Cuban Missile crisis. Wife and I lived in a Trailer on Stock Island which is just off the end of the runway for Boca Chica NAS. The F4s would take off on burner and be no more than 100 feet off the deck on their way to Cuba every hour. Hard to get a good night sleep but it was exciting. |

I would like to buy one in ANY condition so I could put it in my back yard and just sit in it for 12 hours a day making jet noises and caressing it. That's why there are model airplanes- much cheaper :) I build model airplanes as my "at home" quiet hobby. I've built at least a dozen Phantoms over the years and will build that many more again I'm sure. |

I wonder what happened to all the RF4J's we had at Cherry Point that were wrapped in plastic and supposed ready to go. I don't know about those specifically, but a lot of the remaining inventory of F4s has been used as target drones.

For the past few years the grand door prize at my squadron's Christmas party has been a backseat ride in one of the QF-4s here. I have yet to win it or any other door prize.

If I recall, he pancaked in there...but I could be wrong. Even the Phantom could quit at just the wrong time once in a while. Rodent...you out there? |
