History says that a rough approximation of this number can be traced back nearly 4000 years to both the Babylonian and Egyptian empires. You know, those people who also liked making big triangular buildings, but I want to focus on round things today. Like pies: apple, cherry, pumpkin, key lime, chocolate, peanut butter, shoe fly, and so many other tasty variations! Now I’m hungry...  …anyway…back to the history:As time went on, a number of mathematicians continued to improve the accuracy of this number. In approximately 250 BC, Archimedes of Syracuse refined the number by inscribing and circumscribing a circle with polygons and using the Pythagorean theorem to determine that it was between 3 1/7 and 3 10/71. Isaac Newton was able to refine the accuracy to 15 decimal places in the 1600’s. However, this didn’t stop Edwin Goodwin, a doctor, from publishing a bunch of pseudo-scientific sounding garbage in a journal claiming that he'd solved the equation. In 1897, he was even able to convince the Indiana House to unanimously pass a bill declaring that pi would officially have the value of 3.2.  Thankfully, wiser voices prevailed in their Senate or we might have even more problems in our schools! In the early 1900’s, an Indian mathematician, Srinivasa Ramanujan, was able to theorize a more efficient way of calculating Pi. His foundation allowed more recent advancements to calculate the constant to nearly inconceivable precision, such as Timothy Mullican’s 50 trillion decimal place calculation in 2020. This makes Pi to 100 or 1000 places, as posted in my childhood classrooms, seem crude by comparison. It’s hard to believe how many giants have prepared the way for life as we enjoy it today. For example, a little event in the swamps of Mississippi many years ago is the source of inspiration for this thread. Perhaps you recognize him as a wild-haired professor or recall the most famous equation in the world (E=mc²). Maybe you're much smarter than I am, and understand the world of quantum mechanics. No matter which applies to you, I believe that we can agree that minds like his are something that are only encountered a couple times in a generation. With that in mind, what have you done to better yourself and the world around you recently?
