Early 90’s my FD got called out on a structure fire, a large plastics plant. We had four stations, add mutual aid from five surrounding departments. During the investigation phase the story came out. Seems one worker saw a small fire a few weeks before and extinguished it. For that he got some extra time off, a thank you from management and a small cash reward. So he reasoned that small fire= small praise, bigger fire=more time off, more praise, larger cash reward. As has been said, “the best laid plans of mice and men…….etc.” Unfortunately that one got way out of hand. Result, some of the walls were left standing and that was about all, he and his coworkers became unemployed. The company sold off the property and moved all its operations to somewhere in the south, cheaper to rebuild there. The “hero” admitted during questioning setting the second fire, the first was truly accidental to the best of my memory from department scuttlebutt and the newspaper articles. He got some time over that too. |

The distribution centers are trying to bring in automation in order to manage the only cost they can reasonably control, labor. Dealing with labor in CA is a nightmare. |

[and they usually do] Nothing at this time, besides a Star Wars name, indicates that this arson had anything to do with Kimberly Clark hiring illegals or farming out labor to foreigners. It's likely that KMB Master Services Agreement in place with NFI stating that hiring illegal labor would constitute cause to void the operating agreement. This is a 1.2 million square foot facility. Neither the Operator or the Landlord is going to take risks like that, at least it's very unlikely. So the "they" in your post isn't some huge multi-billion dollar titan of industry. There are a lot of smaller family run and mom and pop businesses in there as well. |
