Quoted: You gotta measure that chamber. Do you have any other ammo? Does the bolt cycle smoothly without ammo? Does the bolt head rotate and move freely? Is this "builder" a pro, or a guy with a home workshop? 1) I don’t. I should have bought another box to try, but the dude used that exact ammo (again, I assume a different lot as he’s in another state) to tune the upper (he shoots it at various amounts of torque on the barrel nut and a few other things) with to best accuracy. 2) yes. 3) I’ll grab another BCG as reference and double check. Moves easily.s 4) Pro with good rep on 65Grendel. |

Hornady ammo can be very inconsistent in seating depth. We had a batch of .22 arc that was all over the place. Ended up reseating all. 1 in 10 would have to be mortared out, with 50/50 leaving the bullet stuck in the chamber. Your going to have to measure to the lands and then compare to the loaded rounds at the ogive. Hopefully not precision firearms. |
|
Do those new empty cases chamber? It looks like the bullets are seated too far forward or the throat/lead is short in the chamber. Tony Edited to add: Something is up with that ring around the bullet about 1/4" down from the tip. If the chamber is normal and bullets are seated too long, you will see the rifling engraving the bullets in equidistant locations around the bullet, not a solid circular ring like that. Is that a 22 ARC barrel you are ramming 6 ARC ammo into? |

Quoted: Try replacing the extractor in the maxim bolt. I had similar issues with a maxim bolt in a 6.5 grendel OP states that the bullets were pulled off the front of the case when he retracted the charging handle. If the extractor was not fully engaged in the rim, he wouldn't be able to do that. Tony |

Quoted: I hope that’s all it is. 6 ARC IS SUPPOSED TO BE a precision cartridge, so… You ain't going to get precision ammo from hornady. In my .22 arc their 88 eld match ammo has a 110 Es in 10 rounds. At extended ranges that is going to vertically string bad. My handloads in a similar to 6 arc cartridge are around 20. |

Quoted: ETA: Am I seeing the lands and grooves impressions there on the projectile I see what looks like a band around the bullet about a 1/16" above the case mouth. Normally if it's just hitting the rifling lands, it doesn't look like that. I pulled the SAAMI reamer print and you should have about .090" of lead/free-bore in front of the case mouth where there should be no rifling with a diameter of .2435. So that's .0005 over projectile diameter which is normal. Then in front of that, you have the lead, which extends another .212" where the rifling is tapered to full engagement. When a machine operator chambers a barrel, the lead/throat dimensions are set by the chamber reamer, it's not normally done in multiple operations for production barrels. You punch the reamer in, and it cuts the chamber, shoulder, neck, throat and lead all in one. Then it is gauged for head space, but it is never gauged for correct lead/throat confirmation. The operator is relying on the reamer to be correct for that. Hopefully, Lilja is not using a PTG chamber reamer. If so, there is no telling what the chamber/lead/throat is actually cut to. Tony |

Usually, if the bullet is jamming in the rifling, the bolt will still close because the case gets forced forward buy the action spring/BCG. Of course, this depends on how deep the bullet is engraving the rifling. Firing a rifle with the bullets jammed this hard will spike pressure! |

This wasn’t a cheap upper, and the claims for accuracy by Lilja and the builder are pretty spectacular… |

Lilja cuts their chambers tight and close to minimum. I would be surprised if it is the fault of the barrel though as Lilja makes high quality barrels. Get some chamber gauges (go, no go, field) to check the chamber with your bolt. Get a Hornady bullet comparator to measure the bullet's jump to the lands. Measure the the ammo you are using in a gauge to check the shoulder and OAL. |

Quoted: If a round won't fall into the chamber ('plunk' test), do not fire the rifle - it might blow up. If I didn't know better, I'd swear you have a 5.56 bore on that barrel. Supposedly it was test fired by the builder (and there is some carbon to back that idea up). ETA: it will NOT plunk |

Quoted: You should not buy anything. You should drop off the rifle and ammo at your “builder” and see what he says the problem is. Agree. The builder needs to stand behind their build and since they supplied the barrel and it’s almost surely barrel related, I wouldn’t want to touch it. This is their baby and it was paid for handsomely. Your job is simply to competently handle and shoot the thing as provided. When I build a rifle it’s on me to get it running. I don’t pay to have it done but if I did, it’s on them to get it running. Why would I pay for assembly just so I can disassemble and troubleshoot how to unfuck the assembly lol |

I’m admit that while I’m quite the barrel snob, in my younger years I’ve owned a 12.5” BA Grendel barrel and was boringly consistent about staying <1.5 MOA. Given what such a barrel is for, it was a lot for the price. But now my 12.5 proof Grendel shoots better too though so there’s also that. |
