[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Bought with a bill of sale only, obtained valid title via Vermont process. (Page 2 of 3)

Quoted: How do you go about getting the VIN verified? I have a 1933 International B3 truck I need to get a title for, but isn't anywhere near roadworthy to drive somewhere for VIN verification. On the MO side, for the ID/OD to get Missouri title once the VT paperwork is received? It's going to have to be dragged to an inspection station, or maybe you "know a guy"... |
|
Quoted: And you don't have to take it into Vermont for that to work? |
I dropped the paperwork for my 05 4Runner off at the Post Office on Tuesday. I hope I didn't dick it up too badly. ![]() This might be a bit drawn out as I'm not currently at my home of record much due to being on orders. I'll have to ask my family and friends to keep an eye out for anything from the Vermont DMV in case I need to fix anything. I'm keeping my fingers crossed this works. |

I have two old Hondas from the 70s sitting in the garage that are in title limbo. One was last licensed in the early 2000s and was titled to my deceased dad(reaffirming that title in late 1990s was a pain in the ass requiring a trip to Jefferson City archives for a search for the original title registration). The other I bought with a bill of sale as salvage or abandoned property from a campground. Bike was a 1974 XL100 that had been sitting untouched for 30+ years. Had a 1976 Tennessee plate on it. Since my dad has passed I don't know how I'm going to get the first bike retitled without going through some kind of probate. The other bike seems like a good candidate for the Vermont process. Bikes are currently in non-running condition because I didn't really have a good plan to get them legal. Thanks to OP for outlining his procedure. I'll look into giving it a try on the TN bike. |

Quoted: The states on the OTHER side of this deal have incentives to not accept these titles. States don't care about people OR titles but they're pushed by the Feds to meet NATIONAL title standards, and just like eighty percent receivers, if you tell everybody about it, soon enough the word gets out and feds decide that particular 'interstate commerce' needs to be stopped, and bye bye happy fun times. If you got a good thing, stfu about it. ![]() If it was me, I'd delete this thread. This isnt a new thing. They've been doing this for decades. Other states dont give a damn as long as its not stolen and the states get their $$$. If it was that big of an issue, it would had been stopped years ago. |
I just registered a 67' Camaro this way in GA it was super easy, just had the bill of sale and a state form for the PD to fill out. I called the non-emergency number and they transferred me to 911 , deputy came out within 20 minutes and ran the vin then filled out the paperwork. Took about 10 minutes and I took the papers to the Tax Assessors office, cost me $20.

Just sent in another packet for the most recent KLX (DRZ) I bought. An '03. We'll see how it goes. Co-Worker cleaned the ID plate on his '53 Chevy so we could make out the serial number. I'll have to do some research and see if anything needs to be handled differently for a "serial number" (pre standardized VINs). |
|
They just cashed my check. Ironically the dealer I bought the 4Runner from also said they were able to finally get a replacement title from Tennessee and will be sending it to me. It only took them 6 months. Oops! But honestly I'll only be out the cost of the plates since I'll be able to show the sales tax was already paid when I register it here in Missouri. |
|
I own numbered Shelby vehicles which are mis-titled as Dodge vehicles. If I lost those titles, it sounds like I cou.d have my local police certify that they were originally manufactured by Shelby Automobiles and the.n get that on the title from the before transferring that back to il? |

That would be the ultimately-cheap thing to do. As it is I figure VT has provided a valuable service to me so they can keep their $$. ![]() |

I think I'll keep the Vermont plates and registration for a while. It'll give me time to replace the windshield for the safety inspection. Also, the sales tax was going to get paid one way or another so Vermont may as well keep it. I'll only be out the registration fee and if I use the plates anyway, so it's no big deal. Either way it's looking like I'll be able to start using the 4Runner shortly. Thanks for the process though and I'm sure it'll come in handy in the future. I do have a 67 CJ5 in my brother's barn that we never got the title from the selling in Utah. |

Quoted: All mail in. I live in MO. Bought one bike in MO without a title, bought one bike in IL without a title. As long as they are 15 years or older, you have a good bill of sale, and they're not stolen...should be golden. Quoted: Quoted: And you don't have to take it into Vermont for that to work? Easy peasy. |

Many moons ago I obtained titles to a bunch of cars that escaped Socal as rust free vehicles. All had lost/non-existent titles. I had a buddy that would run the VIN and as long as they didn't pop stolen I purchased them. I used the VT route to obtain titles. One thing I figured out pretty quickly about the Ohio DMV...as long as you had an out of state vin inspection completed and didn't put some stupid low value on the vehicle, the lady would generate a new title on the spot. To many retards would try an get out of paying sales tax by saying the car was free or a couple of hundred bucks. I just chalked it up to the cost of doing business... |

Quoted: I'll call it just under two weeks. I'm not sure when they received it, but I mailed it from the KC area to Vermont on the 16th and it was cashed on the 31st. Or at least the bank processed it on the 31st. |

I was at the license bureau couple of weeks ago titling / registering a truck I bought. Another customer at a different window was having difficulty with the $500 sales amount listed for her vehicle. DMV lady told her anything less than 1/2 of KBB required a notarized bill of sale or it would be rejected. I filed that in the back of my mind. |

Quoted: Tagged, I have a really old scooter I inherited that doesn't have any paperwork. This may be the solution I was looking for. |

Nice, I'll use this on a military trailer I have. Previous owner bought it from the military auctions, but had a buddy pick it up. Never titled it. I had his paid invoice and a bill of sale. VA told me it was title skipping and they wouldn't process it. So because it hasn't had taxes paid, they won't let me pay taxes. Which makes TOTAL sense now that it's a paper weight. |

Or at least the bank processed it on the 31st. That jives with what I remember. Check cashed 3-4 days after delivery. Received the plates just shy of 2 weeks after that. Received the registration papers / stickers just short of 2 weeks after that. About 6 weeks from check cashed to MO title in my hand. ETA: mailed my most recent packet Friday of last week. I'll post dates of check cashed / tags received / registration received. |

Quoted: How bad is the process for Missouri's Bonded Title? No idea. I vetoed that when I learned of the VT process which seemed cheaper, faster, less headache, and gave me a clear title in 6 weeks. With Bonded title you can register and drive, but as I understand it it doesn't "belong" to you (to sell, etc) for 3 years. |
|
Quoted: Good call. I'm not, but the last thing I want to deal with is DOR getting into my personal business. Quoted: Quoted: Quoted: Quoted: Quoted: How many vehicles do you have to buy/sell/trade to be considered a dealer in MO? Quoted: I would expect the VIN indicates manufacturer. Quoted: Quoted: I own numbered Shelby vehicles which are mis-titled as Dodge vehicles. If I lost those titles, it sounds like I cou.d have my local police certify that they were originally manufactured by Shelby Automobiles and the.n get that on the title from the before transferring that back to il? That's the problem. The Vin shows up as a dodge, but Shelby modified them enough to require added placards indicating Shelby Automobiles as the mfgr. |
| I'm still TDY away from home, but I'll be back for a bit this weekend. I'm hoping I have something in the mail from them. Either telling me to correct an error on the paperwork or the actual plates and registration. It will be a month tomorrow that I mailed the check and paperwork in. |
|
Quoted: I'll be doing the same with the old Honda Z50 my grandpa gave me when I was 7. I'm 46 now. It's in pieces in boxes in my storage shed. One of my superiors at work is going to have me walk him through it to obtain titles for 55 and 53 Chevy trucks he has. We may even try it with an old John boat my dad has, to see if we can get on that way. I'll be interested in the Jon boat outcome. |

This showed up sometime over the past couple of days. I'll keep an eye out for the rest of the paperwork and expiration date sticker. Attached File |
|
The check that I mailed with my packet on 8-26 cleared my bank last night. Not sure why it took so long this time compared to the last time (in the OP). Perhaps it's because I had some non-native VT documents in the packet this time (signed MO bill of sale instead of VT bill of sale, etc). Either way, I expect to get the plate in the next week or two and the stickers/registration paperwork a week or so after that. |
|
Quoted: They sent my check back because VT doesn't title vessels <16 feet Once you get the VT registration paperwork, you take that to your state licensing office and use that to get a title from your state. |

Same process though. |

Quoted: Around here, the local cops will come to you. That's in the towns with actual police departments. No idea how it works for the towns that are only covered by the state police. Quoted: Quoted: How do you go about getting the VIN verified? That's in the towns with actual police departments. No idea how it works for the towns that are only covered by the state police. A state trooper will come and inspect a vehicle in WI. Our titling process is pretty straight forward on older vehicles. I did a lost title claim on a 30 year old Monte Carlo in the 2000s when I was a teenager and it was surprisingly easy. |
|
Quoted: Did you check the box for "title" or "registration" on the application? You are applying for a registration, NOT a title. The video I posted in the OP states an application for title (vs application for registration) is the #1 reason most of these forms get rejected. Once you get the VT registration paperwork, you take that to your state licensing office and use that to get a title from your state. Quoted: Quoted: They sent my check back because VT doesn't title vessels <16 feet Once you get the VT registration paperwork, you take that to your state licensing office and use that to get a title from your state. |
|
Quoted: I got registration for the year from another state. I only need a title. The key to the VT process is getting the "registration" document from them. Unique to VT is the fact that the registration document is their legal ownership document. Most other states use titles. VT does not. As such, taking the VT registration document to your local DMV is what allows the conversion from VT "registration" to title from "your state". The whole goal is to get that registration document from VT. If you have a registration document from any other state it won't work, as that state likely uses titles as ownership documents. If I present an OK registration document to MO DMV, MO DMV will say "where is your OK title?" I'll say "I don't have it, I just have the registration." MO DMV will say "kick rocks until you have the OK title, because OK uses titles". If I present a VT registration document to MO DMV, MO DMV will say "where is your VT title?" I'll say "VT doesn't title boats older than 15 years or under 16' in length. They are non-titling state. This registration is my legal ownership document from VT". MO DMV will say "I think that's a load of bullshit, but let me call a supervisor." Shortly afterward MO DMV will say "Ok, looks like that registration paperwork is all I need from VT. Here you go. |

, deputy came out within 20 minutes and ran the vin then filled out the paperwork. Took about 10 minutes and I took the papers to the Tax Assessors office, cost me $20.
