It's probably just the local group I've seen around, but they fit every stereotype of the nerdy board game player. Smelly, socially inept, annoying, and screaming about +5 fireball bullets when a regular speaking voice will do.

Under 4th, I used old CDRs as proxies for drop pods.  I thought they were about the right size to use, and considering the abstracted nature of LOS, the fact that they were flat was unimportant.  Under 5th, you use a different line of sight system (so-called True Line of Sight) which means that the CDRs thing doesn't work so good.

Since they're coming out with a plastic drop pod kit, I suppose that it'll soon be a moot point.

Technically it's a miniatures game, not a board game. Those of us with no chance of getting laid know the difference

I'd be happy to give you a quick run down.

Basically, two (or more) players will agree to a points limit, which defines the size/power of the armies they will play with.  All models have a points cost that is commensurate with the model's abilities.  Stronger models cost more points.  An Imperial Guardsman (think a human wearing a Lvl4 vest with an assault rifle) is 6 points, while a Space Marine (think 8 foot tall superhuman with two hearts, three lungs, armor like Iron Man, and a micro-missile launcher) costs 15 points.  They will decide on a mission (which is usually some variant of objective capturing or unit killing) and pick out their armies.

The game takes place over a number of turns, alternating between each player.  Each "game turn" consists of one "player turn" for each player.  Each "player turn" consists of three phases: movement, shooting, and assault, in that order.  The movement phase is the phase in which units move; simple, neh?  There are various rules for how far various units can move, as well as difficult/dangerous terrain and such that I won't get into here.  The shooting phase is, likewise, when units shoot.  The assault phase is when close combats are fought.  After a set number of game turns (or one side kills all the units on the other, if that happens first), the game is over and you count up whatever you needed to win the mission (objectives, kill points, victory points, whatever).

I've been on a magnetizing spree lately.  The half-painted dreadnought in the pictures of my army that I posted earlier has magnetized arms, so I can swap the right arm between an assault cannon and twin-linked lascannon, and the left arm between a DCCW and a missile launcher.  I helped a friend build a Wave Serpent the other week, and magnetized the turret on it so he can swap between all the weapon options it comes with.  I've got a Tau Skyray sitting on my desk next to my left arm: the Skyray kit comes with all the parts to build a Skyray or Hammerhead, so I've magnetized it up so that it can be switched between a Hammerhead with Ion Cannon, Hammerhead with Railgun, or a Skyray.  I'm assembling and painting that for a friend in exchange for him buying me some Apocalypse templates.

Varies depending on how much effort I'm putting into it.  As you can see from my army pics, I tend to paint things after putting them together.  On some complex things that I give a damn about, I'll put together the major sub-assemblies, and then paint them so that it's easier to paint things that will be hard to paint after I finish putting it together.

I've got a lot of 40k stuff sitting around unpainted from the last time my gaming group got back into it.  We initially started back in college with 2nd ed and then played in the middle of 3rd after the Tau and Necron codexes were released.  I was in the middle of painting up my boys in blue when we fell out of the habit of playing it again.

Lower half of my painting bench.  Note, the doors in the middle open up and there's a keyboard tray there with a craft paint shaker.  Also note, the shelves on either side of the doors are chock full of blisters and boxes.

Crap sitting on the top of my painting bench.  Three monoliths, a chimera, Cadian battleforce, a box of Cadian shock troops and some Army Transport trays.

Different transports.  I like the Army Transports best.  The Battlepack may be better for the larger vehicles.  It worked out ok for my TAU, but the Kroot were always getting caught up in the foam, so I moved them to Army Transport trays.

In addition to that, I've got a ton of stuff in the basement on shelves.

I've got mostly painted armies for Eldar and Tau.  The Eldar need a re-vamp since I haven't really done a lot with them since 2nd Ed.  I've got more Tau painted at this point since I started them after I had a real job and not being a starving college student.  Unpainted I've got most of a company of Ultramarines, a huge Necron force and a decent beginning force for the Guard.

If my group ever gets back to playing 40k I guess I'll have to get my ass in gear and get painting.

4 companies of Space Marines
Black Consuls
Dark Angels
Angels of Absolution
Space Wolves

plus Guard, Inquisition, and Eldar

As well as Space Marine and Imperial Navy for Battlefleet Gothic.

For you Eldar players, you might consider getting back in just to play them.  Like 80% of the tournament circuit is 3 Fire Prism/3 Falcon Eldar and Nidzilla (think 6 carnifexes and 2 hive tyrants and you're on track).  Falcons/Fire Prisms with holofields are nigh-unkillable.  Per the Mathhammer, under 5th ed rules a penetrating hit has a 5.5% chance of destroying a Falcon or Fire Prism if it's just sitting still, and an 8.3% chance of immobilizing it.  The chances are additive.  In other words, you can level 10 BS4 lascannons a turn at the damn thing and just tickle it.  Nidzilla?  Well, 8 monstrous creatures is always fun.  Dakkafexes, Sniperfexes, Flyrant, all those and more.

I'd love to get into BFG, but no one in my gaming group wants to play.

I am in the process of selling all my stuff..just holding on to some premium things. I have bought, traded and acquired all kinds of miniatures games over the last 10 years. Some of the people almost give the stuff away on Ebay.

I already broke 2800 dollars and not one third through everything. I estimate 5k-7K based on current sales. I am being very picky on how I sell it. One army I bought for 180 I sold for over 400

Painted items if presented right and painted to a semi-high standard can grab 150 bucks EACH.

All money going to home theater, prep items and weapons!!

Honestly, I think you're better off getting a ForgeWorld dreadnought.  They look 10x better, you can get the exact weapon options you want (though the new plastic dreadnought is at least a bit better about that than the old metal ones) and you're only paying like a 20 dollar premium on it.  Or at least, that's the way it seems for me.  I love the painting and modeling aspect of 40k.

digitalagestudios.com/imgs/chaplaindnought.jpg

I was looking around their website a few weeks ago. Neat stuff, but damn their prices are up there. $1100 for a Reaver Titan. $280 for a Baneblade tank. $80 for a Landraider. I used to build military models, and can't remember ever paying much more than $50 for a good model. I can't figure out how they can charge so much for a plastic model. I'm assuming those are plastic, right?

I wish I had thought up the W40K universe. I'd be a billionaire by now.

+1

GW's biggest scam is the "Oh, our miniatures are so detailed...they have to come all the way from England..." bollocks. I could buy model soldiers from the hobby shop across the road which where just as detailed for literally half the price. Economy of scale should make the stuff as cheap as shit.

What they fail to recognize that for every kid who goes and buys 2000 points of Tau or Marines, a) this kid would probably buy twice as much as if it was half the price, and b) this kid probably has two friends whose parents got scared by the sticker shock of the price.

At least with inquisitor I only have to buy four or so models.

You may have missed the Tau codex that came out for 4th Edition; I believe it was a significant buff to Tau.  Necrons are still on their old 3rd Ed Codex, but should get a new one next year.  Otherwise, the lists have not changed, but the new ruleset places a higher priority on troop choices for capturing objectives.  Vehicles are now much more difficult to kill, but they're much more stationary.  All models can now "Run," which is like the old Fleet of Foot/Hoof/Claw rule.  The new Fleet rule allows you to move -> run -> assault, whereas models without fleet may only move -> run or move -> assault.

If you're talking about the box set that came with Space Marines and Orks, that was second edition.

Rogue Trader was first, box with SM and Orks was second, box with SM and DE was third, 4th was released as a book or Battle for Macragge with SM and 'nids, 5th is just the book so far, with The Assault on Black Reach, which will feature a complete rulebook, and large Ork and Space Marine armies coming.
