I am also checking in the reloading forum.

I have been a heavy user of Bullseye since the 1990s.
It’s worked for everything for everybody for a 100 years.
Off the top of my head, 158 357 mag, 110 gr 38 special, 180 gr 40, 240 gr 44 mag, 230 gr 45 colt, 230 gr 45 ACP, 115 gn 9mm, 200 gr 10mm-

It has loaded from excellent, to OK, to, “well it will do in a pinch” 5 grains of bullseye had done it.

Now, I have branched out to more appropriate powder for the heavier calibers, but still pretty much using it for 9, 40, and .45 ACP.

I have also been doing a lot of revolver shooting and-
Well, I would just rather have a cleaner shooting powder.  
That, if I had to, I could make useable ammo for everything if it came down to it.

I had messed around with .40 Light for Production quite a while back, and had some WAP load data.
I had a great load right at 130 PF I was using in a pair of 96G Elites.  I remember  it being a lot cleaner shooting than bullseye.
But…
Starting with that load data and working up to 6 grains of Ramshot Silhouette averaging right at 1000 fps from this behind 180 grain coated.





The first picture shows all the un burnt residue I am stuck with.
And it is not all that much cleaner than the bullseye powered brass on the right of them in the second picture.

I can’t really run it any hotter in .40.

What works best for you guys?

Hodgdons longshot in my 40s&w and 45acp jacketed loads.

Just plain Jane reddot in my lead loads.

Longshot works pretty good with straight cast wheel weights dropped in water out of the mould

I have used 231 and WST for my revolver loads (45 ACP and 38 Short Colt). While not the cleanest, they are cleaner than Bullseye.
In a semi I generally use Clays or Titegroup for 40, 45, and 9mm.

I have been very happy using True Blue in 44 Special lately. I could see it being a good choice for 40 S&W.

Maybe try cfe pistol. I use it for SD loads in .45 acp and it performs well. Around 1100 ft/s. with 200 grain bullets.

Concur.  N320/330 are very clean burning.  I use 320 in my 9mm loads.

I've used

- N320
- Winchester 244
- CFE Pistol
- TG

TG is dirty as you would expect, but the others aren't too bad.  N320 is probably the cleanest.  Cleanshot is pretty good as well, but is INVERSE temperature sensitive (hotter temps = less velocity).
