Any reason to not look for an older Winchester 101 12 ga O/U for trap? Looks like they were mostly made by Miroku in the 60s/70s. See lots without barrels threaded for choke tubes. I doubt I would ever be competitive, just to shoot for fun. Right not only have a Browning BPS 12 ga, and I don't think it ever fit me very well - too long LOP. |
| I used a 101 Trap model during my 3 or 4 years of banging away at the clays. It did not prevent me from being a AAA champion. After that, I used it on live pigeons with good success. The gun did not break nor did it malfunction firing several thousand rounds. It is a poor man's Browning Superposed. Fixed chokes were no handicap. |

OP, how much are you going to shoot? The reason just about anyone on the NSCA tour shoot Beretta’s, Blasers, Krieghoff and Perazzi’s are they’re built to take the abuse. Hell even a Browning 725 or newish 825 is a better options. Old Winchester’s are fine guns but won’t hold up to the abuse. Again, shotgun fit is paramount so make sure you nail that regardless of the brand or model. |

They were made by Olin Kodensha, a completely different company with no relation to Miroku. As to why not, well, how about because they're 40+ years old. For only a few hundred dollars more than you'd pay for a desirable 101 you could get a much more modern/newer Browning with screw-in chokes. You'll get better support, parts availability and probably increased reliability in exchange. Also, a lot of guys who have owned and used 101s will tell you they are kicking sons of bitches. Something about the stock configuration. I've never owned one but I've heard from a lot of people who did who said they weren't pleasant to shoot. All that said, if you find a clean old 101 with 30" or 32" barrels, it would probably work fine for trap. Unless somebody has had the barrels threaded for thin-wall tubes, it will have fixed chokes, likely mod/full or full/full. Either configuration would work for trap. But it's unlikely that you'll only want to shoot trap. If you ever decide to try skeet or sporting clays, you'll wish you had screw-in chokes. Actually, I can't think of any reason why you would chose a 101. |
