My question is this: in Texas, is a license to carry (LTC) legally required to participate in pistol sports that use a holster? As far as I can tell, an open holstered pistol falls under "open carry" law that requires an LTC. I don't see any exceptions in Texas law for shooting ranges or shooting sports. This would imply that an LTC is needed to participate in USPSA, 3-Gun, 2-Gun, etc. in Texas. However, many people in Texas participate in these sports without an LTC, so what am I missing? Thanks!

You're either concealed carry or open carry. You can't do both. If you have an LTC and a concealed weapon, you can not decide to open carry and pull your gun out.

If you are competing in a shooting sport, yes, hostlers are legal without an LTC.

I thought the only way to legally open carry a handgun in Texas was if you have a LTC.

...and that there is no "Constitutional Carry" in Texas

"Texas Open Carry Law
In January 2016, the state's "open carry" law – House Bill 910 – went into effect. That law allows licensed firearm owners to carry their guns in plain view, as long as they are in a shoulder or belt holster. However, guns are still not allowed in certain places.Jan 18, 2021"

Thanks! That is the answer I was looking for. In summary, Texas Penal Code § 46.15(b)(3) provides a "sporting activity" exception to the prohibition on pistol carry without a license in § 46.02.

That is for in public like walking down the street, in a store etc. Ranges are private property and you are granted the right to open carry by the owners of the range.

You are exempt as @TSU45 posted. Owners permission prevents you from trespassing.
