Watching and learning about 3 gun plus what I observed in the military is that the end of a shotgun barrel takes one heck of a beating.
Is there a benefit to running an extended choke to prevent damage or am I overthinking this? Throwing these into barrels seems like it could cause some damage and having a extended choke may prevent some of this. I have a 22" JM pro so the barrel sits flush with the Nordic mag... Love the gun and don't want to destroy it for the sake of competitiveness If there is a benefit. What brands do you all recommend? I have read that I should buy a couple and pattern them until I get the hit ratio I want at a given distance with the ammo I plan to shoot. That would be great in theory but I don't know enough about the sport to know what are the most common distances and I would like to generally narrow it down within specific brand(s) and go from there. Quality being a key consideration followed shortly by price... Keep in mind my shotgun experience is limited to M500 breaching guns and 00 Buck. Anyone who is a SME can chime in and tell me I'm being an idiot without me taking offense. I have thick skin, like to learn and want to be competent. Thanks for everyones help in advance! |
| I threw my M2 with a flush mag tube into barrels for years without doing any more than cosmetic damage. Extended chokes are good for easy ID of what choke you have in, you can change them without a tool and can easily check they're tight. Also they constrict the shot less quickly and produce better patterns. I like Briley chokes. |

Extended chokes are a little easier to change out but I feel the real benefit is you can tell just which choke is installed at a glance.
Standing in the start box wondering if you pulled out that LM choke when what you need is Diffusion is not conducive to good shooting. |

So I guess this leads me to the next question. What I have heard from friends who shoot 3 gun would be that I can't go wrong with a Improved modified choke.What I have read is that I "should" ideally have 2-4 chokes on hand to adjust for the competition. What would the go-to chokes be?

I have a full set ,but rarely use most of them, IF , I were starting out here is what I would buy in order - will be somewhat dependent on how the SG portion of stages are setup in your area.
I use IC & LM about 85% of the time, Diffusion about 10% IC LM Diffusion Mod Cyl IM Full I use about equally the IC & LM, I have better accuracy with slugs (best to worse) Mod, IM, IC, so if there are slug targets, what size, and how far - will play heavily on my choice as well. There is not enough difference with my gun between the 3 at 50yds and in, but at 100 it gets big enough to make me have to consciously aim different( high right), I don't like that
