| Is 300 Blackout legal for Heavy Metal division? I'm looking to have a larger cal. barrel made for my ACR to start shooting in that division and I like the idea of keeping the same mags and bolt. Any other opinions on .300BLK? |

Keep in mind I'm not too familiar with 300blk yet. |
| I don't have a 300 blk rifle but my understanding is that most factory loadings will not meet the PF. I have seen quite a few load recipes out there that will. AAC was pushing the caliber for the USPSA Multigun Nationals a couple of years back and posted some major loads they had created. I just looked through some 3 gun rules and it seems about a 50/50 split as to which matches require .308 for Heavy and which allow any 30 cal as long as they meet a 320 PF. |

You'll save a little on powder, but you will have to find/buy/make 300BLK brass, and you're still pushing more expensive .30 cal pills......you would save a little weight on the gun, familiar mags, more compact receiver. Interesting way of doing it if you can afford the time or money for the brass.
I have an 8" 300 BLK SBR that I like to play around with and a buddy and myself have handmade probably 2000+ pcs of 300BLK brass from 223 cases. Its tedious and time consuming IMO......and we rarely leave a piece of 300BLK brass on the ground anymore! |
Punchin holes and bangin steel
| The biggest issue with .300 black out is the drop. For those long shots over 300 your probably going to have to dial your scope rather than just use a reticle or hold overs. I talked to Rob Romero after he shot black out at nationals a few years ago and he said it was not easy. Of course at the same nationals Daniel Horner win using a .300. I think one of the AMU guys also went minor with their .300 loads. So it's not ideal but it is possible at SOME matches not most matches. |

I believe the AMU shooter that went minor was actually shooting .30 Gremlin, not 300blk, at USPSA Nationals. It's a cartridge AMU developed before AAC came out w/ the BLK. I think it was a 6.5G necked up to .30.
And for the record, any shooter shows up at a major w/ 300blk expecting to shoot Heavy Metal, I'm gonna make fun of them all weekend. Just like racing, there is no replacement for displacement! |

Not trying to shoot TO with a major .300 BLKOUT round like Daniel and Tyler were. |

Not trying to shoot TO with a major .300 BLKOUT round like Daniel and Tyler were. I was under the impression that .300blk was good for long distance. Might be a stupid question but, Can 7.62 P-mags be used in a standard AR magwell? Aside from AKs I have 0 experience with 7.62. I'm not trying to save money I'm trying to be able to use the same rifle for every match. The ACR lets me convert over in a few seconds so I want to utilize that. |

No, the 300BLK uses 5.56 mags! It´s a cut down 5.56 with a .308 caliber bullet in it. The only part that is different from a 5.56 AR is the Barrel (and possibly the gas System depending on what Barrel you buy), everything else is the same. Bolts, mags, extractors... everything.
It´s not really all that great at Long distances though, it has the trajectory of a mortar.... well like an AK. You must confuse it with a different round, like 300WinMag or something. |

| I know about the mags and everything being the same thats why I wanted to use the 300blk. But if 300blk wont work for heavy metal and has issues with longer distance I wanted to look into 308. Which is why I asked about the 7.62 P-mags. I'm hearing good things about 300blk from magazines and the industry but a lot of people on forums aren't saying a lot of good so I am a little confused. In regards to my question about the 7.62 P-mags, will the work in a standard lower receiver magwell? |

300blk is a cool little round, but it will never be a 7.62x51. I shot my 300blk over the weekend, and it hits steel much harder than 5.56 at 100 yards (I was using 110g bullets at about 2250 fps), but you can only push a bullet so fast out of that stubby little case.
7.62 P-mags are made for large frame AR rifles, not standard ARs or your ACR. If your going to stick w/ the ACR, 300blk or 6.5 Grendel are your only good choices for more power. Neither of which is a HM cartridge. But, locally there are very few guys shooting HM, plus Tac is a lot easier on the wallet. |
| I love my 300s, but I recognize that the round for what it is -- a great mid-range, medium game round with great flexibility. I stay away from comparisons to the 7.62X39 because those arguments always become too emotional. I prefer to think of 300 BLK, with supersonics, as a semiautomatic .30-30. If you wouldn't consider using a .30-30 for the task, then don't consider the 300 BLK either. |
